That era of Chevy trucks and 4WD inoperative is typically a bad ground on the frame, drivers side, aft front wheel. There is a group of ground wires that are crimped into the same eyelet and the smaller gauge wire corrodes and fails.

Plenty of youtube videos showing location.

SOURCE: 01 Chevy Silverado 4 X 4 not working. 4WD light

Having the same exact problem but with my 1999 escalade. Thought it was the actuator bought a new one installed it transfer case would engage but front end wouldnt lock. Took it out of housing left it plugged in got a friend to go through all the 4wd for me and the plunger never moved out the actuator. Checked my wiring harness which is a four prong ann it had one hot prong like it is suppose to. Traced wires even replaced dash switch same problem. Taking it to local dealership tom to have it checked for codes. I was told it could be the transfercase actuator even though its workin that actuator is what sends power to the front to engage the actuator to lock the differential.

SOURCE: I have a 1995 Silverado 4x4. The 4WD will not

I HAD A BLAZER WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE MOTOR AND SOLVED PROBLEM. TRANSFER CASE MOTOR SHIFTS FROM HIGH TO LOW GEAR IN THE TRANSFER CASE AND TELLS THE FRONT ACTUATORS TO INGAGE FRONT HUBS . MOTOR WON'T MOVE TO 4 HIGH AND GRINDS WHEN TRYING TO MOVE TO 4 LOW, TRANSFER CASE MOTOR FAILING . CHECK VACUUM LINES AND ACTUATORS ON FRONT DIFF THEY FAIL, CAN CHANGE TO CABLE ENGAGEMENT INSTEAD OF FAILURE PRONE VACUUM ACTUATORS.

My 99 Chevrolet silverado 4wd not working.ive replaced the dash switch and still nothing .when I turn the key the 4wd switch lights stay on for a split second then goes off. What else should I try?

I have run into to this problem many times on these trucks, i have seen your problem and also where the 4wd high light wont work but 4wd low and 2wd work fine and the 4 wheel drive works fine. on your truck i will bet its the transfer case selector motor.
the motor is what turns the lights on when in the selected mode which goes through the 4wheel module under the dash, this sounds like a bad selector motor and that where i would start. this motor is located on the transfer case, it bolts to the rear of it.here is a picture of it to help you locate it. good day.4_14_2012_12_37_13_pm.jpg

How to reset the 1999 silverado 4wd light

I don't know if there is any way to reset the service 4wd light but I do know what may have caused it. On my 99 silverado, the 4wd buttons in the dash were the problem. What happens is the solder joints become cracked and thats what triggers the alarm. If you want to, you can take it out and inspect the joints and possibly re-solder them depending on how comfortable you are with it. They may really tiny cracks that are hard to be seen with the naked eye.

I have a 2000 silverado Z71 push button 4wd. My 4wd service light is on but my 4wd works just fine. The light comes and goes. Im going to get a code reader but havent yet. Any idea what it might be?

The 4wd switch has been known to be a problem. p2575 is the code for it. Also there is a ground problem. The wires are on the frame near the drivers side front door. Remove the wires, clean the undercoating off, use dielectric grease on the terminals and reinstall them. After that spray on some undercoating to cover the area.
