Clutch i have a 2004 pontiac sunfire and when i engage the clutch pedal down it stays in the down position and will not come back up it starts and idles fine i just cant drive it because the clutch wont retract back

You may have a few things going on here. First, you need to look under the dashboard where the clutch pedal contacts the pushrod. There is an adjustment screw/locknut. The pushrod should be making contact. If not, losen locknut and adjust then tighten locknut. Secondly, the clutch master cylinder may be low on brake fluid or worn out, lacking hydraulic assist. Third you may have a weak slave cylinder. If they never been replaced I recommend replacing them together. Hopefully the line that carries the fluid isn't leaking. If so it'll need replacing too. This sounds like a handful but for this vehicle it isn't. These parts won't even run you $100 total.

Check to make sure there is a spring on you clutch arm going into bell housing and that it is not broke or stretched

if fluid level was low and you add some more could have air in the system causing spongy pedal or clutch mastercylinder failing.

The hydraulic clutch works much like the brake system, there is a master cylinder with a piston and spring that should keep the pedal up.
You may have to take the clutch master cyl off and inspect the internal parts.

Does the clutch pedal engage? This sounds like a clutch problem to me.

Is the clutch engaged now If you put it in netutral will it roll if so then put it in 1st gear will it roll .This will tell you if the pressure plate is engaged in short is the clutch on or off its like a light switch it grabs on it dosn't

It tells the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) what position your clutch pedal is in (pretty much like the name implies). The PCM will not allow the starter to work unless the clutch pedal is in the down position. The purpose is to keep you from starting the engine with the clutch engaged so the vehicle doesn't jump forward and kill somebody when you twist the key.

Does this noise only happen when switching between these two gears ? Also need to know how much play you have in the clutch pedal (push down on pedal, how far does it go down--free play?? plus when you release the pedal how far from the floor does it star to engauge ??) need to know these questions first before i can answer your question..ok..

clutch is starting to go out

See if the pedal, itself isn't sticking. Next, see if your pedal operates a cable, linkage, or if it is hydraulic and uses a brake line.
(It sounds like a cable is broken)
