Pull the console out and take a good look at the bushings which connect the shifter to the cables. before you buy a shift cable kit take a look at a saturn shifter bushing repair kit at a parts store or on ebay, this is a very common problem on saturn S's 91-02 and often can be fixed with the 20 dollar repair kit. look on youtube for instructions on pulling the console, there are only 4 screws, and the boots to deal with.

Sounds more like the shifter cable isn't connected on one of the ends, or is possibly broken in the sheathing. Check that the shift cable is good.

Transmission does not work will not shift

If it is a automatic transmission check the transmission fluid level. low trans fluid will not allow it to work properly, also if it is an auto the cable and/or linkages from the shifter to the transmission could have broken or come unhooked. If it is a manual transmission the syncronizers are probably shot. the syncronizers are not a diy fix for anyone with no experience working on vehicles.

Repair gear shift

If your shifter won't move at all a couple of things can be wrong. first if you are parked on a hill you have to push the car up the hill while someone tries to move the shifter. In a case like this there is too much pressure on the transmission to allow the shifter to move. Next the cable may be frozen or broken to check have someone in the car hold the brake down so car will not move and disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if you can shift the trans. If you can shift the trans the trans is fine. Now have the person in the car try to move the shifter while it is still disconnected. if it won't move the cable is probably bad. to find out you have to take the shifter apart to get to the other end. When you do this if the cable moves freely when off at both ends the shifter is the problem. Don't worry you normally don't have to do every test because you usually find the problem fairly quickly and the tests don't take a lot of time. Good Luck!

Shift cable

you will have to tear apart the center console to gain access to the shifter and cable assy, then you will have to get under the rig to unhook it from the trans, pay attention to what gear it is in and the location and routing of the cable, have fun!

Shifter won't shift gears

Have someone look @ linkage on trans. while someone moves shift lever thru the gears. If lever @ trans doesn't move then its in the linkage between the column and trans. (possible clip or pin broken @ linkage jounts). If lever @ trans moves then its a trans. internal prob.

Transmission

Try unhooking the shift linkage from the lever right at the trans. Manually shift all the way rearward, if goes in park, problem is either linkage adjustment or in the steering column itself. There is an adjustment on the shifter linkage. If won't go in park when move lever all the way back, problem may be in the trans.
