You may have a bad gasket that fits between the neck and where it attaches, sometime a bad hose clam needs some attention or the neck itself could have a small crack. Make sure the engine is cool before any investigation . . steam will ruin your day when the cooling system is hot! Remember to replace any coolant after the repair has been made.
I think you're right with the air pocket. Feel around the hoses when the engine is running and at temperature (obviously, be careful)- the cold one will give you the clue...
You would need to figure out if it is a cooling problem or something producing extra heat in the engine. Is the radiator fan pulling enough air thru the condenser and radiator ? Is the fan coming on and also when the ac is on and when the engine reaches 220 degrees ? Is it possible the exhaust has a restriction somewhere ?
Have the front control arm bushings replaced and check the ball joints for excessive wear as well as the tie rod ends, the problem lies there. Also check for a cracked frame.
2 possibilities maybe three fist need high side reading to tell if orifice tube is clogged with metal debrie and if clogged this probably means the compressor is coming apart internally next check hot and cold blend doors to see if they are working also check engine fan for flow when engine is hot if you can spin fan with engine off then the center piece of the fan is bad
Check your your radiator cooling fan should come on at about 220 deg. and off at about 210 deg. at idle with a/c off, if it stats to over heat turn a/c on, fan should come on right away, if it dont check voltage at fan motor, if you do have voltage, you have a bad radiator fan motor, more then likely the reason it don't over heat while driving is air is being push through radiator where it cool's the coolant before it goes back into the engine, at stop's no air running through and never cool's coolant .
first disconnect the fan wiring from the fans then locate the bolts for the fan assembly (usually 4) remove them then remove the fan assembly then in reverse assemble yor new fan
