It is actually on the passengers side near the engine wall the pump and reservoir are made as one You will need a flash light follow the drive belt down past the alternator to the powersteering pump look for a black lid with a yellow steering wheel on top. The whole steering system takes only 3/4 quart of dextron automatic transmission fluid so do not over fill.

2005 jetta no power steering hard to steer

First and foremost, (if not already done) check the powersteering resevoir to make sure it has fluid and it is full as well as having no leaks. If it's leaking you may see small dark areas where you frequently park, on the ground. If it is full, there is a chance you need a new one, a hose/line is broken or has a hole (leak). A mechanic is your best choice to find this out. If the resevoir is empty or low, (can be checked hot or cold; look for level indicators for each on dipstick); fill it up and drive for a day or two - check the fluid again (make note of any difference in steering after filling. Powersteering pump may also be belt driven, so make sure the belt is tight (no cracks, etc.) may need to replace belt.

Checking the power steering fluid levels

the power steering resevoir is underneathe the altenatror or your vehicle. you have a gm 3800 series II engine the resevoir is located near the fire wall on the passengerside right under the altenator. the easiest way to check this is to remove the altenator. I say this because there is not much room to put your hands in that area because your coolant overflow tank is there as well. disconnect the ground to the battery first. then disconnect the power lead to altenator. remove serpentine belt. then remove the plug from the altenator. remove the bolts to the altenator and move the altenator aside there you will see the resevoir for the power steering. installation is in reverse order... please rate this......thanks
