2003 Chevrolet Cavalier Logo
Posted on Dec 08, 2010

The instrument cluster on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier has been gradualy going out over the past year. first the temp gauge stopped working, then the speedo would read higher than actual speed and now it is dead and now the tac is dead too. The fuel gauge was the only thing working for the longest time and now it is dead too. Now that the fuel gauge is dead, i cannot put gas in the car even when it is empty. it spits it back out like it's full. The gass backflow problem should be caused by the vent valve for the gas tank and i can replace that easy and cheep, but i dont see why a bad gauge would physicaly stop me from putting gas in the car. Please help. Thanx

I can't understand how the bad cluster would prevent you from fueling. The instrument cluster can be repaired. Look up specmo.com . I had mine repaired there. Quick turnaround. Previous to using Specmo, I tried Two parts from salvage yard and both turned out to be bad. Dealer wanted about $500 to do the repair. I did removal and install, Specmo repaired my cluster for around $125.

2003 chevy silverado, fuel gauge started registere...

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Silverado fuel gauge problems

Fuel gauge needle way past full, holding temp needle down so I cannot read temp either! 2005 with no low beams. Could problem be related?

Most likely this is the common 03-05 Cavalier instrument cluster problem where the stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board go out. It can be fixed, check this page for more on how to get it taken care of - Cavalier fuel gauge broken

Temp gauge off charts

Both my temp and tach have gotten stuck like all of yours. When either does not zero out after you turn the engine off there is one thing that seem to work every time: 1) put key in ignition, 2) turn the key until you start to feel resistance and then turn it back (turn the key so that the battery is on and stop just before the engine is about to turn over.)

The temp and/or tach will slowly fall a little closer to zeroing out each time you do this.

Generally I have to repeat this half turning of the key a up to a few dozen times before the temp or tach will zero out. From what I have read this is a result of poor wiring that is common with cavaliers of the early 2000s.
