First thing you should check is the battery. to do this you should buy a multimeter from a parts house and set it on volts. with car off check charge of battery. it should read 12 volts. start car and retouch red probe to positive and black probe to negitive. it should read 13 to 14 volts. if it still
reads 12 or anything below 13 volts you need to replace alternator. also check wires from alternator to see if any are loose.

My 1997 cadillac refrigerant , i got r 134 coolant that it said to buy and the compressor want come on to charge on the gage its almost to the red (warning) level do i keep putting in till it gets enough...

NOPE STOP CHARGING DONT PUT NO MORE REFRIGERANT IN SYSTEM.DO GOING TO DAMAGE NEW COMPRESSOR AND THE EXCESS PRESSURE WILL BUILD UP CAUSE THE REFRIGERANT CANISTER TO BURST EXPLODE INJURY OR FATALLY HURT YOU. BEST TAKE CAR TO A GARAGE.LET GARAGE PUMP DOWN AC SYSTEM AND CHARGE UP.BECAUSE YOU WILL DAMAGE NEW COMPRESSOR. MOST OF TIME I WILL HOT WIRE THE AC COMPRESSOR. MAKE SURE COMPRESSOR HAS 2 OUNCES OIL IN IT.IF COMPRESSOR START UP NO OIL IT WILL LOCK UP.DONT KEEP PUTTING REFRIGERANT IN THE AC SYSTEM, THE R 134A GOING TO FREEZE UP TOO MUCH MOISTURE IN SYSTEM YOU HAVE TO HAVE A VACUUM PUMP TO PUMP DOWN AC SYSTEM CHECK FOR LEAKS BEFORE CHARGING SYSTEM UP.LOW SIDE NEED TO BE 31 - 36 PSI THE HIGH SIDE SHOULD BE 165 - 205 PSI.

1997 Chevy Cavalier z24. Theft Light blinks. Car will start for 2-3 seconds and then die. I read online and tried a few things but won't work. I turn the key so the radio and lights come on and left them...

Sounds like a dead battery. Clean the battery posts and terminals and charge it up. Then give it a try. If it starts go to auto parts store and get the charging system tested.

The "service charging system" message

Hello,

" service charging system ", means you have an issue with your battery, your alternator, or
your voltage regulator. Something is causing your battery not to charge properly. You should
have it checked as soon as possible. This could keep your vehicle from starting next time.

I hope this helps you.

Car won't start- makes a ticking sound when turn key- radio keeps coming back on after turning it off

It would appear that you have a low battery. You may need a jump start to get going. I would have the battery replaced and make sure your charging is working. When you get it jump started and it is running, check for a red battery light on your dash. If you don't see one, your charging system is OK and you just have a tired battery that needs to be replaced. You can also go through your display choices to the vehicle voltage reading. Make sure you have atlease 13.8 volts.

Hope this helps.

Went to start my car - dead - the lights inside work - this happened once before checked the battery it is good and cleaned the battery post and cables and it worked fine- could it be the altinator?

How do you know the battery is good? If you are sure the battery is good (not sure how you determined this), then you should check the charging system. You can do this by checking battery voltage with engine off, then again with engine running. Voltage should be 1 - 2 volts higher with engine running if charging system is working. This is just a quick check, but will definitely identify a charging system that is not working at all.

My lights started going dim on the dash. the voltage kight started comeing on and then the warning sign came on check chargeing system

You need a new alternator. Also check to be sure that your serpentine belt didnt break. The car was not charging the battery (either the belt broke or the alternator is bad) and running entirely off the battery causing the lights to dim and the voltage light and check charging system lights to come on. Good luck to you. Thanks for using fixya!

Sincerely,

JC
