K1998 gmc jimmy 4 wheel drive truck cranks but wontstart.is getting fire,when it did run it smelled like gas strong

sounds like your tranny might be fried. Check the fluid on the dipstick on a paper towel if its black on the towel it might have gotten hot smell it for a burnt smell.

i have a 1994 gmc jimmy 4.3l cpi. i could not pass the emission test.hard to start, spuddered, and smell of gas was strong. long story short, i replaced my spider injectors, good to go. $278 brand new from auto zone.

Check the ECM/BAT fuse. this fuse controls the ECM and the fuel injection circuit. If the fuse is ok, you need to check for voltage at the spark plug. Pull the #1 spark plug. If the cylinder is getting fuel the plug will be wet with gasoline. Put the spark plug wire back on the plug. Now crank the starter and look for a spark from the spark plug electrode. If you can let me know what you find from these tests, I can help you determine the next course of action.

if it is still cranking but not firing the first thing to check is fuel delivery. get a can of starting fluid from parts store and open the air cleaner box. spray fluid into half leading to the motor while someone tries to start the engine. if it fires you may have a bad fuel pump. good luck

To check EGR valve, plug the vacuum hose to it, and it should not get hot anymore. It if does, it is leaking.
But gas smell is usually bad plug wire or plug.
With good insulation, remove one sparkplug wire at a time, to see if one has no effect. That is the target.

i think if you checked the sparking plugs and map sensors then check your distributer its maybe not delivering the current nedded to perform the spark to some of the cylinders

Take your distributor off and see if the rotor is turning when it is being cranked.If the rotor don,t move then your distributor is bad. If it is then pull #1 plug out and put your finger over the hole and crank Intel you feel air coming to your finger. bring it up slowly and check your timing mark. Make sure the #1 is at the very top center. Your timing marks should line up. If it don,t then you jumped time.
