This engine has points and 4 plugs. So far I have replaced the plug and coil leads and filed the points--minor pitting. Plan to pull the plugs for a look and gapping. Might replace the points and capacitor. Looking for a strobe to set the timing. Owners manual calls for 3 degrees BTDC--how far can one go w/o causing problems? Upon depressing the gas pedal there is some acceleration before going into the bogged mode--upon relaxing the gas pedal 10-20% the engine recovers and resumes a weak acceleration. Strikes me that flooring the gas pedal results in an overly lean mixture and relaxing the pedal gets the mixture back into a useable ratio. Is there carb linkage or cams to take a look at? Other threads speak of the timing belt/chain jumping a cog--don't know which this engine has but don't like the sounds of it--seems like it idles much too well for something that drastic. Any thoughts would be most welcome. LEN

What have you done so far? Does your van have electronic ignition or points? If the latter i'd check/replace points, capacitor & white, low tension wire inside distributor. Also check the spark plugs (all four should have the same grey/brown colour) & H.T. lead resistance, especially if the fault occurs under load/acceleration.

1992 Lumina Backfire - I have a 1992 Lumina Euro, 77K miles, 3.1 V-6. Under moderate to hard acceleration the engine will backfire and you can smell gas. The spark control module, coils, wires, plugs,...

I know you mentioned the EGR valve has been replaced, but you may have a bad 'new' part. I know the car is electronic, but has anyone checked its ignition timing (timing belt been looked at, I know it only has 77k on it). Is the fuel pressure regulator OK and it vacumm supply?

Bogs down

Even though this is an old post i feel it needs an answer since there is 225 followers wanting an answer. This situation sounds as if this vehicle is either suffering from the Throttle Position Sensor switch which has bad spots in it causing lack of voltage or the Fuel rail pressure regulator which can not keep the fuel pressure built up in the fuel rail making the auto veel like it is running out of fuel. And the transmission speed densor which also controls fuel. The situations for each device has a test that can be done to determine which one it is. And last but not least lets never forget our fuel filter this can cause the exact same problem. I am eliminating the cam sensor because it stabilizes at idle. Eliminating the crank sensor because it too at idle also stabilizes and returns a smooth idle. So a fueling problem is what we have here one of the above. Enjoy and if you need help determining which one just ask me I will help you figure it out. Please rate my advise thanks it is how i receive my achievements.

Bogs and backfires--1988 Nissan Urvan E24-H w/Z24 eng.

The dwell angle should be 50 degrees (49-55) Your problem sounds like either the ignition system breaking down under load or a carburettor progression fault, i.e. the idle circuit is working fine but the main jets are blocked. This can sometimes be cleared by revving the engine with the air filter off & then covering the carb inlet with a piece of rag while keeping the throttle wide open, taking care not to let the rag get sucked in! The idea is to use the vacuum of the engine to **** fuel through the jets & hopefully clear them. Do this a couple of times without letting the engine cut out. Remove the rag just before the engine dies, pick up the revs & try again. Sorry I couldn't answer yesterday but there seemed to be a fault with the website.
Good luck & keep in touch.
