There is a sending unit in the gas tank, just a float attached to an arm moving a variable resistor. you need to pull the tank and replace it. given the age of the car and the labor required, you should also replace the fuel pump while you are in there if that year had the pump inside the tank. i would also call around to fabrication/machine shops and see if any of them can flush the tank. you would be surprised at what accumulates in there over the years.

Good day,

The problem is from the sensor which connects to the fuel gauge located at in the fuel tank, hence it malfunctions by giving a false reading in the fuel gauge display in the dashboard.

The solution is to replace the sensor in the tank,but its kind of technical,but if you are mechanically inclined you can follow the solution provided below;

STEP 1 You might consider step 5 at first before you proceed to drain out all the fuel in the tank firstly by loosen out the bolt underneath the fuel tank(fuel tank is located under the car, beside the back right tyre)

STEP 2 Remove the fuel tank,by loosen out the clips from the bungs that connects to the fuel filter which leads to the engine and the bolts that connects the absorbers.
STEP 3 After removing the tank, you will find a big white plastic which is similar to the plastic in your water closet system tank in your toilet.which is found at the edge of the tank.

STEP 4 The sensor to be replaced is a small green rubber in form of an elastic ring found at the top of the white plastic removed from the fuel tank.

STEP 5 The problem ought to be solved after the replacement of the sensor, but if the problem persists,it implies you might have to check the fuse of the fuel gauge, probably the fuse needs to be replaced.

Have a nice day ahead.

Dash gas gauge stops showing proper gas level once it hits half a tank. Then gauge will fluctuate between empty (light will come on), full and anywhere in between but seems fine from full tank to half

If the trouble with the gauge started after you worked on it then you likely damaged or created a restriction to the movement of the sending unit. You will have to remove the tank and double-check your work.

1993 volvo940. Fuel guage works intermittant , now has stopped. Low fuel light works. Any thoughts

Its either a bad ground wire to the sending unit. The sending unit itself. The gauge itself.
If you ground the wire that connects to the sending unit in the tank the gauge should show full. Disconnected the gauge should show empty. this will test the gauge. Most often there is a ground wire going to the sending unit which corrodes.

1994 Volvo 940 died while driving (had only driven a mile). Had full gas tank, fluids checked and are good, timing chain good, all belts seem good. When try to start goes "rrr rrr" like it wants to start...

Inspect your fuel line and see if it's supplying the fuel, if not then you need to check if fuel pump is working or not. if not change the fuel pump and fuel filter. Good Luck

Experiencing various electrical problems

The most common cause of intermittent problems is a poor ground connection.Check the engine and the chassis grounds for tightness and clean surfaces.

1989 Saab 900 low level fuel light

You don;t say whether the fuel gauge is reading accurately, or whether it's always on empty. If the gauge is always showing empty, it's most likely a problem with the sending unit in the fuel tank. Check the resistance across the two terminals of the sending unit.

On a C900, the fuel sender level unit is separate from the fuel pump and located on the right side top of the tank, accessible by removing the trunk floor lift up panel (the pump is located on the left side top of the tank.
Possible problems are: electrical line off or broken, float not working (it's fairly delicate); or gauge not working.

Test the resistance of the sending unit with the lines disconnected, the resistance should be 2.6 to 3.8 ohms full tank, 63.3 to 67.5 ohms empty tank; and test for voltage across the top of the sender unit, if no voltage, that's likely the problem!

If the gauge is otherwise reading accurately (showing 'full' for a full tank, etc) then the problem is likely a gauge malfunction and can be simply replaced.

Good luck!

940 1991 volvo estate

Your problem is fuel gauge is hanging up on the fuel pump. The slide bar/fuel sender is located inside the fuel tank alongside the fuel pump. Today I removed my fuel tank and replaced the pick up strainer on my fuel pump and previously my fuel gauge didn't work, but all I needed to do was slightly bend the slide mechanism and my fuel reading read correctly on my gauge. Previous to that I showed no reading on the dash meter.
