Hi, follow the instruction below on how to replace the ignition switch..

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing or unclipping them.
  • Remove the steering wheel by lifting off the center cover, disconnecting the horn wire and removing the retaining nut and washer. Make a mark on the steering wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can line it back up precisely. Pull the steering wheel straight back to remove from the shaft.
  • Take off windshield wiper and turn signal switches by pulling them off as you did the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer sleeve off of the steering column.
  • Unscrew the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the ignition switch. Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the ignition switch. Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out.
  • Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch to the locked position. Depress the retaining pin with a small screwdriver and turn the key to the Off position to free the cylinder. Once it is free, turn the key to lock position and remove the key and key cylinder.
  • Install your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch assembly. Make sure the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up. Reattach wiring to ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in mounting screws and reassemble steering wheel and switches.

96 jeep cherokee country starts but then shuts off

Could be a problem with the key switch or a relay. You can check the ignition and fuel pump circuits with a meter and see if you are loosing power from the key switch when you let go of the key.

My automatic door locks on my 96 grand Cherokee keep randomly locking and unlocking almost constantly while driving down the road, even while the car is stopped and the key is out of the ignition.

could be a weak switch , hold it down or off while driving and see if it stops if it does this switch is bad do it to them all till you find the right one , or you have a short in a wire but I think it is the latter , good luck

What is engine immobilizer

It's anti-theft security system, Nissan Vehicle Immobiliser System (NVIS)

The NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System will not allow the engine to start without the use of a registered key.

If the engine fails to start using a registered key (for example, when interference is caused by another registered key, an automated toll road device or automatic payment device on the key ring), restart the engine using the following procedures.

1. Leave the ignition switch placed in the ON position for approximately 5 seconds.

2. Place the ignition switch in the OFF or LOCK position and wait approximately 10 seconds.

3. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

4. Restart the engine while holding the device (which may have caused the interference) separate from the registered key.

If the no start condition re-occurs, NISSAN recommends placing the registered key on a separate key ring to avoid interference from other devices.

Statement related to Section 15 of FCC Rules for NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System (CONT ASSY - IMMOBILIZER, ANT ASSY - IMMOBILIZER) This device complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules and RSS-210 of Industry Canada. Operation is subject to the following two conditions; (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device.

CHANGES OR MODIFICATIONS NOT EXPRESSLY APPROVED BY THE PARTY RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLIANCE COULD VOID THE USER'S AUTHORITY TO OPERATE THE EQUIPMENT.

Security indicator light

For vehicles without Intelligent Key: This light blinks whenever the ignition switch is placed in the LOCK, OFF or ACC position.

For vehicles with Intelligent Key: This light blinks when the ignition switch is placed in the LOCK position with the key removed from the ignition switch.

This function indicates the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System is operational.

If the NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System is malfunctioning, the light will remain on while the ignition switch is placed in the ON position.

If the light still remains on and/or the engine will not start, see a NISSAN dealer for NISSAN Vehicle Immobilizer System service as soon as possible. Please bring all registered keys that you have when visiting your NISSAN dealer for service.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

2000 chrysler 300m-ignition will not turn

It sounds like the ignition tumbler and/ or switch needs to be replaced. To avoid all the testing and such, replace both at the same time, since they get the same ware. Otherwise, take it to a good locksmith and let them see if it needs a good lub-ing and some cleaning. You know, ear wax and all that stuff people use keys for! A locksmith might cost you around 75 to 100 bucks per hour/ solution in the mid west. BTW- NEVER keep a lot of keys on your key ring. It's been known to be the cause of MANY ignition switch issues.Instead use a ring that un-clips or breaks away from your big wad of keys.

1993 Land Rover stops running on when on rough roads,

I had the same problem with my 1993 range rover. It turned out to be the ignition switch. after thousands of times inserting the key, over the years this process slowly pushes the back side of the switch away from the ignition switch housing. This consists of a plastic disk which holds the mechanical stop that keeps the ignition in the run position. If the disk is not secure and tight against the ignition housing the hold mechanism will not work properly. Mine would start and run however the first time i hit a bump the ignition switch would turn its self to the acc. position and the vehicle would stop running. I found the solution on okierover.com He was very clever in his way of a permanent repair. He opened up the steering column and used tie wraps to hold the plastic disk secure against the end of the ignition switch. Thus no more automatic ignition turn offs.
