Clicking sound is your blend door actuator stripping it's gears and failing to open the door that directs the blower air through the heater core. Follow the sound to the actuator and remove it. Install a new one. You may have to remove some panels to get to it. The part is shown below and costs $32 at autozone. Please let me know if you have questions.

Ford Explorer clicking- no heat

Blend door actuator failure is a common occurrence on many older Explorers. The clicking noise is actually caused by a stripped nylon gear constantly attempting to hold open the blend door which mixes the hot and cold air sent to registers on dash. As long as the temperature control setting is in the heat range this actuator will hold the door which wants to be normally closed, open. Air flow when the fan is on helps to hold the door open relieving stress on the gear. However whenever the fan or engine are off and the temp control is in the heat range the small gear must hold the door on its own which eventually leads to failure. My tip is to always return the temperature control to the cooling position whenever heat is not needed or truck is turned off. If you are reading this too late the link below will provide you with step by step instructions to replace actuator. I would recommend an OEM replacement part, it makes it easier to orientate when installing the new one. Did this myself and all went well.

My blows cold and I hear a clicking sound from the inside...what could it be?

There are electric motors that move blend doors in your dash board. The blend doors control the heat/cool ratios as well as the location the air will blow from. It's very common for the doors to break or the motor to fail and require replacement which can be costly.

Heater&air conditioning vents wont reach position make a clicking noise have no heat or air how do i fix? 2003 ford explorer

The clicking noise you hear is a stripped out plastic gear from the blend air door motor almost every car maker now uses little electric motors to control heater door panels, put it in the position for it to make noise go under your dash find where it is usually externally mounted remove it and replace it cost about 30 dollars at the dealer.depending on which of the 3 motors its is usually not hard to do.

Loud clicking noise from dash whenever heat

I have and 2002 with rear air and had the same noise and problem in the back. There is motor in the back that moves a flapper door open and closed to blend the hot and cold. The motor has plastic gears in it and they strip out making a clicking noise when the motor cannot hit the point that the heat control dial is being set too. Probably the same set under the front dash. You will more than likely need to by a new motor assy.

When u turn temperature control knob theres a clicking sound in dash. we had heat and when we turned it to cold and back to heat with no heat and still clicking sound. what to do?

An actuator for the blend door may have popped off or broken. Involves tearing into the dash, usally around the passenger side of the dash board.

Heating...burrrrrrrrr

The clicking is the air temperature blend door motor, most likely the motor will have to be replaced the blend door checked to make sure it moves freely, this repair requires the removal of the dash assembly.
