You have described symtoms usually associated with two different engine problems. The knocking is generally a sign of a lower engine (Con rod or main) bearing failure. The smoking is generally a sign of oil in the upper cylindr/combustion chamber. This can be traced to rings and or valve problems in most cases. Unless of course a valve or valve spring has failed which may cause physical damage to the upper end. Any further attempt to start or run the engine at this point without a proper diagnosis could caus efurther damage. Did the eng stop running after the smoke was seen?

My 1999 forester had been sitting for 1 year.it ran fine when parked, now it starts but wouldnt keep running.i unhooked fuel line and turned on ignition fuel comes out for 3 to 4 seconds then quits.a dealer...

The fuel should only come out for a 3-4 seconds that is because the pump shuts of due to no resistance (safety reasons) the ECM thinks the fuel line has leaked and cuts off the fuel. But -----the question is that your vehicle shuts off on its on I would change the spark plugs, wires, air filter and fuel filter and then you should be fine.

My Windstar was parked for a few weeks. When I

The backfire may have caused a coolant leak into the engine.
Check for a blown headgasket- look for combustion bubbles in the coolant resevoir (or ask for a coolant system combustion gas check at a radiator specialist).
