I just replace the coil packs in the 05 lincoln LS less than a year ago. If I get autozone to run a check on the car, will the codes come up as to which coil is bad?

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2010

I went to autozone yesterday and said it was a bad cat so I punched them both out and cleaned them and its doing the same thing as yesterday with the fail safe. One cat was bad and broken up inside and the other was good. When I put it all back together with the O2 sensors in, it ran fine for a few seconds unlike before I punched them out. I will go down tomorrow to get the codes again from autozone and give them back to you. I do have a V6 and am aware of the other 3 coil packs under the manifold...pain in the ****. I'll be in touch tomorrow. Thanks for all your help

I asked you get back to me on the other page.
You will have 1 or 2 COP Coils go bad every year
I also own a 2004 V8

Yes and no
I asked that you get the codes

PO301 thruPO308,the last # being the cylinder

If you get just a MIL Lamp and say a PO 303,you can
replace that coil and see what happens

The example I gave you on the ETC Failsafe, is not something a dealer
is aware of. People on this site have spent up to $4000.00 at a dealer
when my 1 bad coil, you install yourself, would have cost $70.00

You will get several codes that you ignore, on an LS and stay with the
coil swapping.

I hope you have a V8 or the intake will have to be removed to do some
coils.

You may want my phone #, so you can knock this down your self
Do you have a 7mm wrench and socket. That is all you need on a V8

To answer your question another way
If autozone gives you several codes,3 are coil codes ,then what?
I have the answer,it it not to replace all the coils.

A converter does not fail in less than 12 years without a reason
    Overheating ,rich fuel mixture,vacuum leaks,etc

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2010

Im hoping it will be one of the coils as thats an easy fix.

What do you get on the dash,as far as failsafe goes?

  • Anonymous Dec 01, 2010

I get the wrench light....as soon as that comes on after driving 5-10 seconds it goes right into fail safe

You will need to replace both cats, have no exhaust leaks,
and I would do all 4 O2 Sensors, but you could wait and see
    how it goes.
There are too many monitors on our LS's, to write a book on
I spent over an hour studying today for you
I believe you had one or two bad coils for the better part of a year
You were not aware of the misfire condition and the converters got ruined
Now without the monitors able to evaluate the O2 Content from the rear sensor
you have no injector control, thus, while I have not found the technical explanation
you have a MIL Lamp and can not complete much of any monitors functions or
start or end any drive cycles.
    Bottom line,no O2 in a good and funtioning converter,your done,won't run
A simple coil failure a year ago, caused a lot of damage and expense.
The Fail-Safe thing is something else. Lets get the exhaust done then continue on
Spray the throttle plate with CRC Throttle Body Cleaner,Spray the MAF with CRC MAF
    Cleaner,check fuel pressure

My car is driving slow what can that be

Your vehicle is 14 years old, and probably has quite a few miles on it. START WITH A MAJOR TUNE-UP, INCLUDING PLUGS, WIRES, COIL PACKS, and a FUEL SYSTEM INSPECTION.

You'll probably find that the fuel filter is old and should have been replaced years ago :)

Replaced plugs and coils on lincoln 2004 LS 75 miles later check engine light comes on?

Working backward, make sure everything is hooked up correctly ; coils, injectors, vac lines, etc... If everything looks good, you can go to your local Checker, Autozone or O'Rieleys and have them do code pull for you to help isolate fault.

My 2004 Lincoln ls has been acting up. First it was running rough so I changed coil on 4 and then 2 seven monthes later after which car ran great. Now on two occasions when triing to start alarm goes off...

I don't think going to AutoZone for codes is of much
value to anyone

Obviously your LS don't miss on 4 cyl or have 4 bad coils

You didn't need to replace any coils except the one that fails,
which is 1 or 2 a year on that car.

You most likely have one really bad coil that sets all kinds
of codes.

You can buy one new coil & walk it every couple days until
you get to the bad one or go to a repair shop with an oscilloscope
and the correct inductive coil adapter.

You need to use the correct OEM style plugs (NGK)
were the motorcraft mfg.

Check alternator output with a scope & make sure
the battery isn't more than 4 years old. Todays cars
are sensitive to voltage, current, resistance and grounds

Clean the MAF Sensor (crc maf cleaner)

At 100,000 miles replace front O2 Sensors

I have an 02 v8 lincoln ls which trembles as if its going to turn off but does not. It also smells like burnt rubber. Check engine light came on also. i had seal repaired in april 09 along with all coils...

Sounds like a problem with the coils again, my 02 ls had to get several coils replaced because of a factory defect which causes water intrusion from the top of the firewall which eventually makes it's way to the coilpacks and causes misfires. You stated stated you had a seal fixed and i don't if it is a kit Ford sells that addresses this H2o problem, Ford addresses this in a technical service bulletin. If you haven't installed this kit you wil have multiple failures with the coilpacks(i had to replace 5 of them in less than a year). Even with that these coils will fail had to replace 2 recently because of identical problems that you have. (approx 2 yrs after replacing the 5 for H2O intrusion)

2003 Lincoln LS check engine light

I had the same problem with a 2004 LS. I took it to the dealer and turned out that 6 ignition coils were out and was factory defect. Ford extended the warranty for the ignition coil. All work and parts "no charge" this service was done about a month ago

V-8 / Low Power / Doesn't shift correctly

Has your tech checked this vehicle for an exhaust restriction? He can check this with a vacuum pressure guage at the DPFE sensor hoses. You should have 1psi or less at idle and 3 to 4 psi at wide open throttle.Anything else would be a restriction.
Are you getting any trouble codes with this?
