My spouse had to get out 1996 ford explorer boosted while i was at work,so that evening i tested the battery it had a charge of 12.4 and is about 5 years old so i bought a new battery ,i put the new battery in it had a charge of only 12.36 so i went for a drive came back and tested the battery it had a charge of 13.32, i checked it again about 1 hour later the charge was at 12.7,the next morning itested the battery it was at 12.4,i unhooked the battery cables took the battery out it ,tested it again the charge was 12.58,put the battery back in and went for a drive ,came back tested the battery it was 13.4,so i started the truck and tested the battery while motor was running ,it was taking a charge o 14.3 to 14.45. so i shut the motor off . checked the battery about 2 hours later the charge read12.59 i disconected the battery cables ,disconected the alternator wires, checked the battery charge 2 hours later was at 12.62 -12.59, put the battery cables back on tested the battery it was 12.52 , chaeck the battery in 1 hour it was at 12.49.check in 2 hours it was still at 12.49 hooked the alternator wires back up chaed the battery 1 hour later tested at 12.52. to say the least i am puzzled ,went for a drive came back tested the battery it tested at 13.32 came and wrote this note. should the alternator be giving the battery that much of a charge and why is it loosing part of the charge after sitting?

A new battery should have approx 12.62 fully charged
It could be slightly more
If you ever see 13 volts, on an old battery, it is gone

You need a min of 12.5, to do any testing of your vehicle, or you charge it
It should hold 12.5 or more for 3 or 4 weeks, then charge, if you let the truck sit
unused.

I have a 1995 safari van charged battery and took it off charger it then wouln;t start so i boosted it, then started took it for a drive and then shut it off it wouldnt start whats wrong with it?

May have a bad starter solenoid and the extra boost is whats needed to get it to work.
May also have a dead cell in the battery. Use a multi meter and test the battery. Should have about 12.6 volts. 12 volts would not be a full charge. May even want to take the battery to a parts store and have it tested unless you have a tester to check the amps.

Changed altenater and wont keep charge! Bettery light is on???

Have your battery load tested. Sounds like your battery is just getting what we call a surface charge. It holds the charge momentarily. This would be due to a bad cell in your battery. Even if you have a new battery you can still have a bad cell. I think you are going to find the battery is bad.

Have a 1996 Taurus wagon--dead battery--got brand new battery and connected it properly and car barely turns over and wont turn enough to start--car was sitting for about three months

Was the battery checked before it was sold to you? Batteries will lose their charge over a period of time even when not hooked up. If you have a voltmeter it should read 12.8 volts on a fully charged battery.
Have you tried to boost the car with cables?
I suspect if the car was working OK 3 months ago it should start. Which leads me to suggest an undercharged battery.

Entire 1996 blazer electrical dies when starter solenoid engaged

if voltage reulator on alt. does not stop current after battery is charged it will over charge battery abd can drain cell from boiling electrolite out.check 4 bulged battery case(swelling) indication of overchaeging.the start problem could be your starter wires connection.remove starter wires clean contacts and torque respectively.dont forget the ground to motor.sounds like a loose or corroded contact somewhere.

96 explorer turns over but starter is not engaging

I always check remans before they are installed; the Bendix may not be advancing the starter gear or you may have teeth missing from the flywheel. I'd pull the starter and check the condition of the flyhweel.
