Sometimes the engine failsafe mode is triggered due to a sensor failure or an electrical glitch. It's also common for a security system fault to engage this warning light, which means it's not always a mechanical issue that's causing the failsafe.

it says limp-home operations what does that mean and what is the real promblem that is occuring with my mustang. my warning display is stating engine failsafe mode when i was driving also felt no pick up for a couple of miles. please answer
Go to your local garage (anyone) and have them read the OBDII code this will tell you what has caused the problem, cost for this should be minimal £7-10 ask them for all the reported codes you can check them out at http://www.bluejag.co.uk if you wish to find out what they mean.
Hi; If I get the 'Trans Failsafe Prog" message twice within about 2 hours, The SES light will go on automatically. Since I do not seem to have any real transmission problems, this SES message clears itself in about 24 hours. The "Trans Failsafe Prog" messageseems to be used to indicate other transmission problems as well, like loss of transmission fluid, so be careful. I have a 2002 X5. Cheers. Omer
I had to replace 4 different coils on my '02 LS before it finally stopped misfiring. After one code and coil replaced it would go to the next one. I had to replace them in this order, 2,3,7,8
When # 7 was misfiring it wouldn't even pull a code all of the time, the check engine light would come on one day then go off the next, really strange.
Sorry late reply - just seen this problem. The amber warning is basically saying a problem developing. The red and limp home action is showing more serious developement - But not always very bad news. Had car with same symptoms and it was a faulty sensor on engine, and another similar case was throtle position sensor. Get the car to a garage that can read the faults - so you know what the problem is that has been registered in the memory.
Hope this helps
That's the motor-management warning light. Meaning: serious errors are being detected by the motor-management computer (= ECU). You should have a dealer readout those ECU faultcodes using VAGCOM to determine the cause a.s.a.p, before (more) harm is done to the engine.
Please be aware that your motor could also switch to "failsafe" mode when too many severe errors are detected, meaning it's terribly slow to drive and turbo-pressure is nearly non-existing.
The failsafe mode can appear following numerous faults being detected - some faults can be momentary and register but not cause a problem. These are normally reset by just turning ignition off/on. get the fault code memory read at a garage and this may give you a clue as to a possible problem developing. Failsafe mode will give you reduced engine performance but will allow you to drive for normally some distance. If a serious problem developes your car message centre will tell you to shut off the engine or it will shut it down.
good luck.
The gentleman above gave you the correct starting point. There are red and amber lights. Amber usually indicates a problem with the engine electronics or emissions system. Red lights are related to charging or alternator problems and engine overheating. If a light comes on you need to check the related system before you wind up disabled on the side of the highway.
