The engine started clacking and then went off. I ran down the batttery attempting to restart it. I tried to jump it and there nothing. I then noticed the codes come up p0118, p0455,and p0442. I knew about the evap leak but I wonder why I cannot start it and why the clacking. Is it possible its thrown a rod? The car is an 02 dodge stratus.

OBD II Code P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Inpu t
Our emissions expert has put together the following information about the P0118 fault code. We have also included diagnostic procedures you can take to your repair shop if the mechanic is having difficulty analyzing the code.
OBD II Fault Code

  • OBD II P0118
Fault Code Definition
The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor measures the rise and fall of the Engine Coolant Temperature. This provides critical data needed for the Power Train Control Module (PCM) to control the Air Fuel Ratio, the Ignition Spark Timing, the cooling fans, and many components of the Emissions Control Systems. The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor converts the coolant temperature into a voltage that is high when the engine is cold and low as the engine warms up. Code P0118 indicates a high voltage input from the Coolant Temperature Sensor to the PCM.
Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light will illuminate
  • In many cases, no abnormal symptoms may be noticed
  • In some cases, the engine may be hard starting and/or get poor fuel economy
Common Problems That Trigger the P0118 Code
  • Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
  • Rusty and/or corroded Engine Coolant
  • Faulty or corroded Engine Coolant Temperature wiring or connections
Common Misdiagnoses
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is replaced when the real cause is rusty coolant
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is replaced when the real cause is a poor connection or chafed wiring
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor is replaced when the real problem is in the Cooling System

Maybe a broken timing belt? Engine still turning, but cam shaft stopped turning. Pistons hitting the open valves?

It was 96 outside and temp gauge went from normal to hot lights started coming on then I lost all power. What could this be

Your vehicle ran hot and probably did damage to the engine. Probably blown headgasket and/or cracked head. A compression test will confirm this.

4.9l V-8. Why won't it start?

You will have damaged some of the critical electronic components on the engine when you connected the power source up the wrong way.

Until you identify and replace all the damaged components you will not be able to start the engine. To begin with the starter motor solenoid and starter motor will most likely be damaged. You would need to check with a mechanic or auto electrician on all the items that will be damaged as a result of connecting power up incorrectly.

01 durango 5.9 no bus message but if I wiggle the black connector at the pcm the car starts but shuts down after a minute or so,meaning the fuel will not prime without me doing that ,prior to the no b

Remove the black connector to pcm . Check for corrosion pins . Then inspect the plug end for corrosion. I found moisture seep by the weather pack seal and wire on older vehicles.

Started my 2001 pt cruiser, scraped my car off (snow). when I went to shut it off to go get my phone out of my apartment, I noticed the oil light on. Well I shut it down ran inside when I went to start it...

Your engine oil light is a problem. You may have run out of oil and if the engine is run with too low of an oil level it can seize up. You may need to have that engine replaced. This is why it is important to check the oil regularly and to have it changed per manufacturer's recommendations.

Truck ran fine set for an hour or so come back would not star 3 attempts waited for a little while cranked up. went out this morning would not crank up 5 attempts.Notice batt. was dragging went and had it...

Most of your discription would indicate a bad starter,
if your talking about the engine turning over or cranking

Some people call a no start or no ignition, a not cranking
situation, which is a wrong statement.

You may have a bad fuel pump, if the motor turns
over but won't start.

My 2004 mini cooper will not take a jump. The car was running fine. I ran into a store and 3 minutes later attempted to start it and NOTHING. So I attempted to jump it, Mini will not take a jump. Any idea...

If you are trying to jump from the factory "Jump start" terminals and nothing is working, You should suspect your cable to battery connections. Remove the battery cables from the battery and clean the battery posts and the cable terminals. (Auto parts stores sell a very inexpensive tool to do this) Reinstall and tighten the terminals.

2003 chevy impala overheated and now no power and wont restart

The overheating will not have anything to do with the lost of power for cranking or the lights not working. Try charging the Battery and start over.

Turns over but will not start

There is a shradder vavle on the fuel rail that the injectors are connected to, you will need to buy a test guage kit, they are about $20-50. Changing the spark plugs is not checking for spark, pull a plug wire at the plug put a screw driver with a well insulated handle in the hole, hold it close (1/4") to a bare metal spot on engine, then have someone crank the engine, you should hear and see the spark jump to ground
