2005 impala LS with 3.8 eng. & 61290 miles. Transmission started shifting hard on 1st & 2nd gears, just out of nowhere. Is this a common problem on Chevys? Once on open high way vehicle runs perfect. Also notice the power steering is kind of loud, as if the power steering pump was going bad.

Two things: Pressure control solenoid first. Second issue is the valve body. These are common issues, but 9 times out of 10 its just the pressure control solenoid. Power steering, could have a leak, that causes air, which in turn causes noise or yes, a noisy pump.

Thank you, I still have extended warranty I will get it service asap. Should I take it to the chevy dealer or a transmission specialist, like Aamco? I have the option with my warranty.. I know that the dealers should be the ideal place but I also know that some of the mechanics working in these dealers are not specialist in transmissions and as a result will have me going back and forth trying to pin point the problem.

2005 lincoln ls transmission is shifting hard from 1st to 2nd gear

You replace the Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Pack

There are 3 pressure control solenoids & 4 shift solenoids in one
plastic part ,made by Bosch

You remove the trans pan,the gasket is reuseable silicone
You remove the filter
You remove approx 7 -- T30 bolts, holding the solenoid pack
& one 10mm electrical connector bolt

I have same problem with my 2005 with 65,000 miles---think it is down shift between 2nd & 1st gear making noise. I read on ford 500 forum

I have a 2004 Impala that transmission jerks into gears periodically when doing a bit of stopping and starting off. Have talked to other Impala owners, and some have had tranny problems also. It just...

This is common problems to the transmission when the fluid is getting to dirty and the transmission fluid and filter needs to be replaced. The transmission fluid and filter should be replaced every 45,000 miles to ensure there is no dirt causing the shift servos from binding. The other thing to is that when the transmission fluid get's to dirty, the fluid gets thicker. It retains fluid retention which can cause conflicts in the transmission sensors. What your experiencing is, your transmission is not shifting back to first gear and sticking in to 2nd gear. When you get on the gas peddle, the transmission sensors realize that it needs to be in 1st gear, so as the engine's RPM goes up and the transmission drops back to 1st, you get the jerking condition which will in turn cause you a $2,300.00 transmission replacement. For now when starting off from a stop, let the engine creep forward on it's own first to ensure that the transmission has shifted in to 1st gear. Then get on the gas peddle lightly till you have the transmission serviced. $100.00 transmission service is better then $2,300.00 transmission replacement. Good luck and do not have a transmission fluid flush, just filter and fluid replacement.

You seem to be on the right track. You should replace the PWM solinoid also, that is the most likly cause for the conern. Make sure the valves move good also, high milage may end up needing a valve body due to sticking valves.
Make sure to check your mounts also, that could be the banging you feel.
Also there should be a code in the pcm if it is banging as hard as you say, p1811 is the most common, but that usally has a shudder also.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.
