How do you diagnose a Error code S016 Rt Frt Air damper solenoid open short to ground for 1996 Cadillac Eldorado for an open circuit or short in the wiring harness on the car? I've put 2 replacement struts on the car and continue to get the same error code. The original strut gave several error code for RF, LF, and RR. I replaced all 3 with used OEM struts and eliminated all but the one code, replaced the RF again and stiil have that code. I need to confirm that the problem isn't in the cars wiring before I trya naother strut. Thanks, Eric

I checked the connector--no corrosion. I cleaned them anyhow, measured about 9 volts DC between the 2 wires with the ignition on, and good resistance between them with the ignition off. I applied some dielectric grease to the connector, and made sure I had a good fit. I'm still getting error code S016 after clearing the codes (twice). I understand that using used struts could set me up for repeated similar problems, but cadillac wants $1800.00 each for a new strut, so i don't have much of a choice if I want to keep the active ride control operating. I know I can buy a pair of new aftermarket passive struts that will disable the active ride contol and not show any error codes, but I don't want to do that I can avoid it. I'm just concerned that I'm getting the same error code with the 2 "new" struts and the original factory strut, so I have to consider that there might be a problem with the cars wiring itself. What should the voltage be between the 2 wires coming to the strut? Should there be resistance between the 2 wires with the ignition off?

Hi, me again. I forgot to ask in my last reply if there is a way to check for a bad sensor on the strut itself? Is there supposed to be resistance between the two wires on the strut when disconnected form the cars wiring harness?? Is one a ground wire and should have resistance to ground ?

I have a 1996 Cadillac Eldorado with a error code S016- Rt Frt air dampener solenoid open/short to ground. This is the 3rd strut (original + 2 used replacements) that are giving me this code. I had error codes for the Left front and RR as well, but those went away after I replaced the LF strut and RR Air shock. Before I try a 4th RF strut, I wanted to confirm that I didn't have a wiring harness issue on the car. The last tech suggested I check for a bad connection. I checked (it was good) cleaned and dielectric greased it up, it still gave the same error after clearing the OBD 1 computer twice for the code. I measured the voltage and resistance accross the wires going to the struts and from the wiring harness on both the RF and LF. I got good resistance between the wires leading to both struts (and the last RF one I pulled off) However, I got 12v accross the 2 wires leading to the RF (from the computer, ie car's wiring harness) with both the ignition OFF and ON, but nothing--no reistance or voltage on the LF (or good side according to the OBD 1 computer). I can't locate a wiring diagram to see if these are wired in a series or parallel, but I would susspect that they are not in series. Both wiring harnesses have the same colored wires, a grey one and a blue green one with what looks like a darker blue stripe. I'm beginning to think that the RF strut is good, but the problem is in the car somewhere. Does anyone there have any experience with these cars and this issue? I really need a little specific help here, not a generic answer. Thanks again, Eric

PS. I just sent this same question, but mistakenly IDed the car as a 1996. It is a 1995

Wiring diagram for the front components of the suspension:
How do you diagnose a Error code S016 Rt Frt Air - suzman_40.jpg

As you can see both the solenoids are wired seperately to the control unit. I think the problem would be in the wiring. You should get 0V at the suspension with the ignition off. Disconnect the harnesses at both wheels and measure the resistance on the solenoids. The readings should be within 10% of each other. Then disconnect the harness at the control unit and check each of the wires for:

  • Continuity
  • Short to battery voltage
  • Short to earth
and repair where nescesary.
If you still have not found the problem I'd suggest using a set of leads, connect RF sensor to LF harness and vise versa. Then check to see if the code reader brings up LF wheel instead of RF wheel. If it does replace the strut - again!! If not your problem is wiring or control unit.

No i dont think its the leg more like a wiring connection is corroded ,but using second hand parts doesnt alway eliminate a problem as often the secondhand part could have more problems than the part you have taken off so trying to clear a problem could cause more problems ,check the wiring connections for corrosion first before you start pulling your hair out

Sorry but this is a bit beyond me as never worked on one ,a land rover yes and lots of citreons ,is it really necessary to clear the faults as when a vehiclñe goes for its annual vehicle inspection they just check the shocks with a bouncing plate on each axle, the obdii connector isnt touched ,the abs and airbag is checked but that all ,so you have a 12v supply to one of the legs when everything is shut off although their is no amperage to this supply ,makes me wonder if the fault is in the ECU ,i would have thought that these legs were parallel as the computer would have to sense each one seperatly to compute the adjustments necessary .iam trying to think here and its 0800 in the morning and i havent had my cup of tea yet ,but iam thinking more along the line of a component failure in the cars ECU causing the leakage of voltage past a transistor or something ..

My air bag light on my 2000 Ford Econoline van flashes a 19 code. Does anyone know what that means?

Seems to be a very common problem with Ford. The wiring harness beneath the drivers seat contains the sensors for the airbag system. Go under the drivers seat and secure all the wires and clips. This makes most error lights for the airbags go away. Hope this helps and good luck!
