My 2000 Durango suddenly starts running rough. Engine light comes on and all I do is disconnect the battery and reconnect it to clear the light and improve the performance. It might run fine for days or even weeks before doing the same thing again. The engine light has been checked and it indicates one injector being the cause but not the same injector each time. Help!.

If clearing the code fixes the performance of the vehicle then it probably means that the code is related to some component of the fuel or air system.

If it was an O2 (oxegen) sensor going bad and giving the code then it will automatically adjust the fuel mix to a default setting which will often result in poor running conditions.

If you take your vehicle, while the engine light is on, to your local auto parts store you should be able to borrow their code reader for free to check and see what the code is. This would give you a better idea of what is actually going wrong with the thing.

If the code is related to an injector but its different each time then it might be something further down the line that is causing your problems. I would maybe check your fuel pressure(you can borrow a tool for this at your local auto parts store) to help troubleshoot that. If your pressure is low it could be because of anything from a clogged fuel filter, failing fuel pump, or even a loose gas cap. Any one of these could cause an intermittent lack of fuel pressure which could potentially throw a code for whatever injector is trying to pull at that time.

In general if your vehicle is running poorly I might suggest checking a few additional standard things.
1. check air filter and make sure its not clogged
2. check gas cap make sure its tight
3. check spark plug wires for connections
4. check distributor cap and rotor for excessive wear
5. check vacuum lines for leaks or disconnects
6. check fluid levels (always do this anyway for any problem)

If you were able to put in some codes from the engine light then I could possible suggest even more possibilities, or help you focus down on the issue.

If the dealer still has it, run a bottle of fuel injection cleaner through the gas tank. Make certain it has the word NAPTHA on the label. The other ones are just mineral oil and you can get that cheap most anywhere. My parents had a 1991 caravan that started running rough. I did spark plug check and two of them indicated a lean condition. (clogged injector) So I went to the dealer and got the NAPTHA cleaner. Fifty miles later, the problem went away.

Even if that doesn't fix the problem the injectors could probably use a good cleaning. Then you will have to dig into the injectors themselves or the ignition system. Maybe some time when it is acting up, stop at one of the auto parts places that has analyzers and see if they can give a code with their box. Those are usually more accurate than onboard diagnostics.

The dealer will whack you about $60-$75 for diagnostic so try a place like Advanced auto first.

I have a 2002 dodge Durango it is a 4.7 and when I had that kind of problem it was the injection. I replaced it and it solved the problem. You may have an ecm problem.

Change your ignition coils and check connections for loose wires. Over time they began to misfire due to heat. Change all of them at once with new spark plugs.

Had this problem on mine, and it was none of the above! actually 1 of the plugs going into the PCM/ECM module became loose, and when I checked all of them it 'snapped' back in as I was putting a little pressure on it. Also clean all your grounds, even if they look good, and don't forget the one at the dipstick tube! Grounds are frequently the cause of mysterious 'Gremlins' like that.

Yep been there done that. It is your EGR valve. Replace it should fix the problem.

An easy and no cost would be to take all the spark plugs out and clean them gently with a wire brush and check the gap on them to make sure they are set to proper gap. before doing any of the other things people have suggested. and then run for a a while to see if problem goes away.

Chek the cable for the involved cilinder spark plug. many a time, a cable is not sufficiently separate from the engine block and so shorts every time the sparkplug fires, causing rough idling and lowering perfomance

An easy possible solution is to try adding some "HEET" or similar product to the fuel tank. You could have water in the tank and it only shows up when you get the tank low. It'll also clean the injectors a bit so no harm done there either. Add the HEET when you fill the tank next time and see. Good luck.

Third you have to check the possibility of getting heat

Older vehicles just do not run well on gasoline 'enhanced' with ethanol. See if you can find some 90 octane pure gasoline. Cured the problem, without spending a lot of money. Change the filter(s), if you can. Older cars are not meant to run on corn syrup.

Is this occuring while on longer trips? If so, could be fuel pump in tank filter is clogged. If totally unpredictable occurances, could even be moisture in tank if keeping fuel tank level low in high moisture environments.

Had a problem with similar symptoms to yours a few years ago. Turned out to be a double header... first a semi blocked fuel filter - (the one in the end of the common rail manifold). The other an intermittent (in tank) electric fuel pump, replaced the pump and cleaned the filter (also drained and refiled the fuel tank. Problem solved.
The car was a Ford Falcon BA series.

I would definitely check the PCM it tells the injectors when to fire and
how long to fire. It sounds like you have already had some kind of
engine diagnostics ran on it because you were told it was a injector.
If the PCM checks out, I would have fuel injector service ran on it. If
one or more of the injectors becomes clogged, or is not spraying properly, the ECM can't regulate the air fuel mixture. You may want
to consider changing the Fuel Injectors and stop burning Arco gas
if you're using it.

Try resetting the pcm disconnect the negative on battery turn the key to the crank position wait 30 seconds re connect battery an see if the light goes off an see how she runs If this does not help have the ecm checked the ecm is a computer that has to do with injectors an such

First, check the injector connector for tightness and corrosion. Then check computer connectors and any in-between connectors. Take the car to one of the auto parts stores that have the free code-reader service. look for set codes, delete them and run the engine too see if the code comes back. If it does not, one at a time jiggle the injector connectors to see if one sets a code, likewise any other plugs you can reach, fuses and relays. If the store clerk does not want to go through this routine, buy a code reader, preferably one with the re-set feature. Many cars require you to drive 15 or so miles after clearing the codes before new ones can set. Good reason to have your own. It may take a few years for the code reader to pay for itself, but you'll probably be driving for a few years.Or, go back to a parts store after driving far enough to set new codes, if any.
Or spend bucks while repair shops change parts until the problem is corrected. I keep a code reader in my van since 1997, have not needed it yet with my 2009 g-caravan.
