Transmission When driving, as soon as it shifts out of first, it shifts 2nd, 3rd, and to overdrive very fast, loses power even with accelerator all the way to the floor, won't go any faster. This just started this morning, no noises, smells, or hard shifting before today.

Based on your description, I'd guess you have the AOD transmission. That was a not so common option on our Fox Birds. There is a cable that goes from the throttle linkage down to the transmission to modify the shift points. If that cable comes loose (which really is a common problem), then the shifting issue you're describing will occur. The linkage was connected by a plastic bushing pretty close to the same place the throttle cable connects. That bushing dry-rots, crumbles, falls out, and then the linkage comes loose. Ford sells a modification kit with a bronze bushing to replace the plastic one. I had to make the same repair on my son's 1990 'Bird. I have the older C5 3-speed auto in my '86, so don't have the cable linkage. If I remember correctly, the repair kit was only about $11, however, is ONLY available at Ford dealerships.

Maybe the stick in the transmission is broken.

it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission, vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the transmission.best to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision, you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line, follow it to the top of engine, the vacum line is about 3/8th line, and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short, when you drive the car, start out in low gear and shift the transmission, manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually, the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing fixya.com

Transmision starts out in 1st shifts to 2nd then third but will not shift into overdrive , but once it reaches 3rd gear ,it stays there when you come to a stop . after that it will only shift manually...

Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Thank you for using fixya and have your Safari scanned for the DTC codes that would indicate what issues your transmission is having to put you in to limp mode.

Transmission shifts down abruptly when accelerating.

It most likely is a transmission issue, a internal issue inside the transmission.

4l60e going from 1st to 3rd and dont have overdrive any more

You most likely have a broken sunshell inside the transmission. They tend to go out when the transmission is shifted to drive when while still rolling in reverse.

Hard shift and blinking overdrive

The blinking overdrive button is telling u that a serious fault has occurred in the electronic controls or a mechanical fault such as excess slippage is occurring.

1989 Volvo 760 turbo problems

You need an impulse sender that is located in the distributor. It is easier to get a used one from a wrecking yard and install the whole distributor. Am I right in assuming your rpm gauge is fluctuating up and down rapidly?
On your transmission problem, you can try cleaning the overdrive solenoid located on the back of the bell housing near the main linkage. Sometimes that helps with the delayed shifting problems.
