It means that something is faulty in the emissions control , have the vehicle scanned by a reputable tech

  • Ghost M_P Nov 23, 2010

Ignore it! like most problem with my passat unless if you are taking the emission test. If you want to make it go away simply unplug battery for about a day or overnight then plug it back in. If you don't know the radio code drive the car for minutes it'll appear back on. Barrow the scan tool and erase it.
Cause could also be a fuel leak, loose gas cap, incorrect or change in grade of fuel, sensor pick up smoke/fuel order in surrounding ( outside or fuel spill) such as if you go to a gas station.
Keep fire extinguisher handy in trunk just in case if m wrong. ;-)

As we tell everyone else who comes on here with warning lights: When there's a warning light on, that means a trouble code is stored in the computer. Don't ask us to guess what caused the light to go on when all you have to do is get the trouble codes read.

I own a 2001 VW Passat Wagon.3.0 liter, 6 cyl., 30 valve engine. The 'check engine' light and 'emissions workshop' messages came on and I need to know what the problem could be.

most autoparts stores will run the check engine light for you for free....I am assuming that you either have a clogged catalytic converter, or your o2 sensor is throwing a fault....have autozone check it out and post back.

Emissions workshop light on, no apparent problem?

99% of the time when the emission warning light is turned on there is no symptom u can feel, however there is a fault present present in the memory of the powertrain control module (known as the PCM), have the cars OBD2 electronic engine control system tested to find out what the fault code is, there are over 200 poss codes.

VW Passat 2001: Exhaust emission warning lamp flashing. Manual says 'blinks if the catalyst can be damaged by misfires'. Any suggestions?

"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off??? After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!

Exhaust omission warning light on

It means that the code you got was for an emissions problem. could be an O2 sensor or MAFF sensor.( Mass Air Flow ) Or even the catalytic converter. You should have posted the trouble code here.
