I have a 1988 Corvette with automatic transmission. when i stop, and put it in Park, turn off engine, the car rolls as if in Nuetral. Park gear will not engage. i am told its either a shattered Park pin, or out-of-adjustment linkage. could i possibly get a diagram on how to check, and fix this problem? although i am told the pin can be accest through the transmission pan, i'm not sure what it looks like, or adjustment proceedures. your help would be highly appreciated. thank you

Have a trans shop check it. there are no adjustments inside the pan. If it cant be adjusted on the outside, something is broken and a trans shop will need to take it apart anyhow.

1988 Dodge Ram 50 Automatic shifts into park reverse and neutral. But physically won't go into drive gears.

Disconnect shift cable from transmission linkage and try to manually put transmission in drive gear ( make sure wheels chocked/park brake on ). If transmission goes into drive gear, suspect a shift cable or shifter assembly problem. If you can't manually shift into drive gear by hand with cable disconnected, suspect internal transmission/shift linkage issue

When I start the car, I can't put the car in shift mode. Unless I am on a slight incline and put my emergency brake on to roll. What is the problem and how much will it cost me to fix?

Can't shift out of park because I've parked on a slight hill and my car has backed up slightly jaming the parking pawl in the automatic transmission after I have shifted into park but before I have set the parking brake. This is a complaint that Ford owners have had for years. Try this proceedure to see if this solves you problem and best of all it's Free. 1st when you park develop the habit of; while still having the foot brake down apply the park brake firmly first and then shift into park and then release the foot brake. Remember it is important to apply park brake with enough force to prevent the vehicle from rolling. What happens is in the rear of an automatic transmission there is a coarse gear that has a lever that engages this larger gear and when you shift into park range this lever goes into one of the spaces in the larger gear and stops the car from rolling. If the car starts to roll it can Jam the lever against the gear and make it difficult to shift out of park. By using the procedure I've outlined it prevents the lever OR Pawl from being jambed into the larger park gear. Try to make this a habit and you shouldn't have anymore problems.

Transmission will work in park but when you go to drive or revers

Your question is strange in that it isn't possible to know if a transmission is "working" when it's in park. If you mean that you can push it when it is in any gear except park, without the engine running, that is normal. In park, a steel bar engages openings in the output drum which mechanically locks the driveline preventing the vehicle from rolling. All other gears are hydraulically operated and depend upon internal pressure in order to work.
If the engine isn't running or the pump in the transmission has failed the vehicle will roll when pushed.

My car stopped starting.

Based on the information you have supplied, the car is not shifting in to the correct position. So when you try starting the car , it will not allow the starter to crank thinking it is not in park (which it is not...in reverse) I suspect that the shifter cable from lever to the transmission has become stretched over time and use. It can be adjusted at the transmission to shift cable hook up. The connection at the lever base could have also get disconnected. Try that first

1988 Ford Bronco Transmission Issues

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

Nissan pulsar 1988 wont go into gear I can put the gear stick in the right gear but does nothing wont reverse or drive, its automatic and has a reconditioned engine in it

try checking your transmission oil (i had the same problem but after $30 it was fixed) it might had drained out. if your transmission oil is fine then consult a mechanic preferebly an automatic transmission specialist. may be your transmission needs a rebuild.

4WD basic question

The 4-lo is so low that sometimes you really have to push it to go into gear. Put the transmission into neutral, and even let it roll a little bit to get it to slip in easier.

You could try to turn the engine off as well while you're in neutral, and then put into 4-lo.

If it's impossible, I'd have your linkage checked to make sure nothing flew up in there and is stuck and/or it's bent.
