Good morning, last night on the motorway,my battery light came on,the car went dead,breakdown assistance says its the Alternator,but could this be caused by a faulty Battery? K Rowe

No, the altenator when running send the electricity to the entire car. when it goes bad the car will run off the battery untill it is drained, then the car will shut down

At this point maybe both. The battery light comes on when the alternator is not supplying enough power to operate the vehicle, and the battery is being forced to provide the difference. This problem, if not serviced, will quickly drain the battery. Replacement of the alternator is most likely needed. Be advised that alternator manufacturer/re-builder will not warrant an alternator that is installed on a car with a dead battery. So have you battery checked out; if it is good get it charged first. If it's bad replace it along with the alternator and you should have no problems.
IF THEY CHECKED FOR A DRAW ON THE BATTERY AND THERE WAS NONE DID THEY CHECK ALTERNATOR OUTPUT? IF IT WAS IN SPECS THEN YOU MOST LIKELY HAVE A BAD BATTERY. YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE IT CHECKED AGAIN. THE DEALER IS NOT ABOVE MAKING MISTAKES
Try to unplug ground wire at night and plug in in the morning. If the battery is good, then it must be there's short circuit, check your wiring. If the battery is dead, then the battery is bad.
Is the battery dead? Your alternator may be bad. If you drove it last night you may have driven on battery power and not realized it. You should have gotten some kind of warning message. Need to know if the battery is dead.
DID U CHECK THE STARTER TO SEE IF IT IS GOOD!!!MAKE SURE THE WIRE IS CONNECTED REAL GOOD TO THE STARTER TOO!!! B/C IT WILL DRAIN YOUR BATTERY!!! THE SAME WITH THE ALTERNATOR IT TOO WILL DRAIN YOUR BATTERY!!
