The bearings in your car are pressed into a hub. If the part is available as an assembly, it can be replaced that way. Generally on a front drive car:
Remove wheels and brake calipers
If it is pressed in: remove the rotors, disconnect the drive shafts and remove the steering knuckle. Then the old bearing is pressed out and the new one pressed in with a machine shop press. If the bearing is part of the hub, that will be unbolted and the new one swapped.

On a scale of 1-10 difficulty, Id rate it a strong 7

Ford Transit swb driveshaft centre bearing replacement

Are you working on the front wheel or rear wheel drive model?

I have little experience with front wheel drive models but once the drive shaft or propellor shaft has been removed, bearing replacement is fairly straightforward. I believe the drive shaft bearing is retained with a shrunk-on collar while there is no special retainer of the propshaft centre bearing and is easily pulled off once the two shafts have been separated.

Is there a bearing or bushing on the shaft that the left axle slides onto on a 1999 Bonneville se?

i have been fooled by this one way to many times. when a wheel bearing or hub assesembly is making noise, it will sound like it is comming from the other side. i do not know why this is. but one test will prove if and which one. when growling noise occurs, notice, when turning left or right, does noise get louder and quieter as you turn? if so then it is wheel bearing. when turning left the right side will make more noise. when turning right the left side will make more noise. if always the same then, tires or transmission need addressing. the cv axle does not make a growling noise, unless front wheel drive car does not move, it makes a clicking or poping noise. sorry but at least you dont have to replace other axle

How do you replace front wheel bearing in 1987 ford tempo, standard transmission?

There is not really a wheel bearing. It is called a CV Joint. They are pretty difficult to change. If you do try it yourself then you will have to have it re-aligned.

Hi , I just bought a 97 toy corolla 130,000 miles automatic and the drivetrain seems very loud especially on the highway. The transmission shifts fine, the fluid level is ok,the engine runs strong. Is there...

If the transmission has ever been low on fluid it could have ruined the differential. This will make a whining sound going down the road. You could have wheel bearings going out as well. You can check those by getting up to the speed in which the noise is clearly audible, then swerve the car back and forth. Obviously we're not trying to crash the vehicle so you don't have to be overly aggressive here, just back and forth. If the sound changes pitch or goes away then it's a wheel bearing.

Is this rumbling wheel bearings or transmission?

If the sound is all the time, no matter what you are doing then it is the Transmission going bad. CV Joints, Wheel bearing will only make the noise when in rotation.. Also remember that this is a front wheel drive car, so it will throw you off thinking it is the wheel bearings or CV joints due to the front wheel drive

Transmission / road noise

If the noise in the front increases whenever you drive forward with the wheels turned then you can be sure that the CV joints are worn out and in need of replacing.
Also,,even if there is no play in the wheel bearings,it doesn't mean the bearings have not worn out.
The transmission oil type should be specified on a sticker inside the door jamb,,or under the hood.
