I have a 2004 Honda Civic and the malfunction indicator lamp came on this evening while I was driving it. The car has run well till now. It is -22 outside and the car had not been run for 10 days. Before starting the block heater had been plugged in. Could it be that something is a little frozen and therefore the light has come on?

SOURCE: what causes the malfunction indicator lamp to comes on honda accord 2001?what can i do to correct it?

It could be anything at all that is electrical or sensor-related in nature. Your car is an OBD2 car (for emissions), and it's a very strictly-controlled system. As a result, pretty much anything that fails will cause the light to come on and will store a code in the computer. Go to AutoZone and ask them to scan your computer for codes - they'll do it for free, where a dealer will hit you for up to an hour's labor. They'll tell you the fault codes, which will point you in the right direction for the fix. Get the codes that come out of the scan and post them as a reply here and we can go from there.

pull the release cable and prop it up with something, while it is prop'd up go tap on the fuel door, if that doesn't work then you may have to pry the fuel door open

Damn near anything, or nothing.
You must pull the computer codes to know what.
No other way.

The m.i.l. will come on for lots of reasons but in my exp. if the car is running fine and you have oil pressure and its not over-heating that you wont damage the car by driving home.

yes, this is the case of a failed throttle body, in which case it needs replaced, the car is getting too much fuel causing the high idle. this needs replaced asap. you could proably find a small independant honda shop that could do the work for less.

Malfunction indicator lamp is on. Gas cap was tight not sure what problem is 2004 civic 94,000 kms.

There are 3 major problems why car can't crank.

1. Bad fuel mix.. or no fuel.
2. Bad Air & Gas compression. (air and gas intake to the cylinders are not proportionate)
3. Poor spark plugs or poor electric wiring to engine (nothing to ignite the compressed mix)

There are thousands of other reasons why a car don't start, but the above mentioned are the most common and critical.

hope it helps.

Honda civic

An intermittant check engine light ( MIL, malfunction indicator lamp) usually means the system has noticed some trouble that has either corrected itself or has been compensated for. You can have a shop check the DTCs ( Diagnostic Trouble Codes), or for pending codes ( problems noticed but not enough to store a fault code)
