2001 ford taurus was over heating so i replaced the thermostat. well then it started running cold and wouldnt heat up and i was getting air up through the coolant resevoir. so i replaced the watrer pump. now it is dieseling and then smoothing out and i am getting smoke from the exhaust. it almost sounds like marbles bouncing around in the engine but it only does it for short periods of time then it smoothes out.

SOURCE: My 2001 ford Taurus heating temp gauge is not

Start the engine when cool, remove rad cap and start engine and let it run with the heater on. (not defrost) Top up coolant as needed in rad, and let it run until either the rad fan comes on and off 2 or 3 times, or you can see increased flow in rad from thermostat opening. It will obviously happen after it reaches operating temperature, so watch after gauge gets close to there. Wait until you see that flow 2 or 3 times or fan comes on and off before you put cap on, and fill return bottle to proper level as well. That should cure it, by getting air out of system, and coolant flowing through heater core.

SOURCE: 1.5 L. single overhead cam

This could be bearing (rod or crankshaft) rattle or a rod cap that is coming loose- I lost one engine thinking it was only an exhaust line hitting somewhere. You might try (using appropriate caution around moving parts) using a long screwdriver with the blade touching various points along the cam shaft cover or the block itself and placing the handle end on or behind your ear. One can often locate the area of the noise fairly accurately.
Modern engine analyzer can often diagnose such a sound and it might be worth a few bucks to have it analyzed before it becomes a death rattle.
BTW, we have 3 vehicles, not counting our kids' various junkers, and each time a new one enters the stables, we buy the Haynes service manual for it; for the few dollars, they can help avoid unnecessary trips to a service shop and give you an idea why the labor costs are so high (if they are.)

possibly the bled door is stuck open so only the cold air from a/c works when on defrost vs closing to allow heat to cycle through the system as defrost runs through the a/c system

I have a 2001 Ford Taurus that after replacing the water pump I lost all heat. I replaced the thermostat and "burped" the air out of the system but still don't have heat any ideas what it could be

Bob,there still may be air in there........I always bleed the air from the heater hose line entering the water pump. There should be a connection about a foot or so above where it enters there.
Take that loose while engine is cool.
Have someone start the car while you hold it downward AWAY from the alternator, and you stay clear also of that belt.
If the fluid gushes out of that line,it should be getting thru your heater core.

sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, if its takes a very long time for the engine to warm up and you get nothing but cold air from your heat then thats the first place i would start.

1999 Ford Taurus 3.0l EFI 6cyl, Heater does not work, only blows cold air, have already flushed the radiator cooling system, and installed a new thermostat, still cold air. Anyone's help will be Greatly...

It could be air locked. Feel both your heater hoses, and, with the engine running, loosen the one that's cold, if there is one. If that doesn't help, it is probably your heat control valve that is malfunctioning.

My 2001 ford Taurus heating temp gauge is not constant on dashboard. It goes up and down. I don?t have heat. Water pump, thermostat, in and out pipe and coolant are changed. Still no heat.

Ford taurus Wagon 2001 heater problem

Check your coolant level. If the antifreeze is low the water pump may not be able to pump enough of the coolant through your heater core. When the car runs faster it is able to pump more of the warm antifreeze to the heater core.

No Heat in 99 Taurus

Just finished fixing my daughters 1999 taurus heat. It would blow warm only when running down the road. At idle it blew cold. I started with replacing thermostat, and water pump because they are the easier fix. Still did not help. Then I replaced the heater core. A daunting job but not that hard to move the dash slighly out of the way to replace. There is a good write up at tarusclub.com. After that, heat was better but at idle, it would still blow cool sometimes. Researched and found answer. Park car on the steepest hill you can find with front of car up. Start car and take off reservoir cap. Let car warm up and keep rpms about 1500. After a while the fluid will come running out of the car and all over the place but it will bring air bubbles with it. Reduce rpm, add more fluid and repeat about 3 times. It will make a mess but after that, the heater works perfectly. We get heat long before the temp gage indicates any and it never blows cold unless you lower the temp.
