The thermostat is on the end of the engine (driver's side), by the transmission. See figure below. Also, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat and let me know if you have questions.
sorry, forgot to add picture and procedure
3.4L EngineDisconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly.
Partially drain the cooling system into a suitable container, to a level below the thermostat.
Disconnect the radiator hose from the coolant outlet.
Unfasten the coolant outlet retaining bolts.
Remove the outlet, then remove the thermostat.
Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces.
To install:Install the new thermostat with the pellet towards the engine.
Install the outlet to the intake manifold. Apply RTV sealant to the housing bolts and tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
Reconnect the radiator hose to the thermostat coolant outlet.
Install the air cleaner and duct assembly.
Refill the coolant and check for leaks.
When adding coolant, it is important that you use DEX-COOL® (orange colored, silicate-free) coolant. If silicate coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner. Connect the negative battery cable.

SOURCE: Dead battery in 1999 Oldsmobile silhouette
you have to take the fuse box out. unhook the hot wire from the front of the fuse box.then there is a little black holder with which you can take a flat head screwdriver and lift the little peg in the middle of it which will then come out. then just pull the fuse box off to the side and u should be to the battery.hope this helps

as long as the engine temperature is normal, i would suspect a clogged heater core, the dex-cool antifreeze is notorious for building up deposits in cooling system. have heater core flushed first to see if it makes any difference
