Hi, What causes a cylinder to misfire? Basically, it's one of three things: loss of spark; the air/fuel mixture is too far out of balance to ignite; or loss of compression. Loss of spark includes anything that prevents coil voltage from jumping the electrode gap at the end of the spark plug. Causes include worn, fouled or damaged spark plugs, bad spark plug wires or even a cracked distributor cap. A weak coil or excessive rotor gas inside a distributor would affect all cylinders, not just a single cylinder.

If you find a P0300 random misfire code, it means the misfire is random and is moving around from cylinder to cylinder. The cause here would likely be something that upsets the engine's air/fuel mixture, such as a major vacuum leak, a leaky EGR valve or unusually low fuel pressure (weak pump or faulty pressure regulator).

In the case of a steady misfire, isolating the misfiring cylinder is the first step in diagnosing the problem. The old-fashioned method for finding a weak cylinder is to temporarily disconnect each of the spark plug wires, one at a time, while the engine is idling. When there's no change in the idle speed, then you have pinpointed the weak cylinder.
A power balance test will tell you the same thing, but this requires some hookups and an engine analyzer. A power balance test is preferable to pulling plug wires, because it keeps you away from the voltage and prevents the voltage from causing any damage to the electronics in the ignition system.
When a plug wire is physically disconnected from a spark plug, the high voltage surge from the coil cannot follow its normal path to ground through the plug wire and spark plug, so it passes back through the coil. Most ignition systems are robust enough to withstand such voltage backups intermittently but not on a prolonged basis. If the coil or ignition module is already weak, it may push the component over the brink causing it to fail.

2002 freelander cylinders 4and5 misfiring codes

Land Rover Freelander
P0304 AND P0305<<<<<< no engine told at all. a V6 of sorts.?
ONLY>?
misfire on OBD2 means, only weak combustion pressures there.
or weak power from those 2. only
causes are manifold.
  1. bad spark plugs there. (i bet all)
  2. bad /weak injectors there.
  3. weak compression on this 2, (a tool tests this)
  4. burned head valves there.
  5. blown head-gasket between 4 to 5 (I6) (NO)
  6. vacuum leaks (air) to #4 of #5 via intake man or injector seals.
  7. bad spark coils. or boots on there tips a carbon wreck.
  8. worse deeper engine issues, cam lobes, a mess. or piston rings.
wild guess is this your engine?
2.5-litre V6 Rover KV6 Engine petrol (2001-2006), badged as 'V6'
24-valve quad-cam DOHC.
and horrid belt drive cams super hard to fix. lacking custom tools.
Firing order. 1-6-5-4-3-2
1, 3 and 5 starting at the front of the engine. left-hand bank
means even odd banks.
means head gasket can not do #5 act this V6 not I6
why do a tuneup, 100k miles , new spark plugs and boots on COPs
there are 6 cops there, COIL OVER PLUGS.
The boots can be replaced cheap, on tips and new spark plugs
gapped to spec.
USA.(answers)

as you see COP 4 AND 5 DO NOT SHARE SPARK COILS.

What does codes PO3OO,POO31,PO43O,P2238,PO3O6 mean?

The main problem looks like P0306 which is a missfire on #6 cylinder. P0300 means random misfire so you may have another cylinder misfiring. How old are the plugs?
P0031, P0430 and P2238 all are related to the O2 sensors on bank 1. Which is probably caused by the misfiring of the spark plugs.
I would have the spark plugs changed first. Erase all the codes and then see what happens.

2002 ford escape.....truck started sputtering and would not accelerate very fast and check engine light started blinking. what could it be?

I have an 2002 Escape with a 3.0L engine.
First you need to get a OBD2 scan for the check engine code.
I suspect the code will tell you that one of the cylinders is misfiring.
If you also have the V6 engine, the most common cause of misfire is one of the Coil-Over-Plugs (COP). Each cylinder has a COP on the spark plug.
On the V6, you need to remove the upper intake manifold to get the back 3 COPs.
If you have a V6, and you have cylinder misfire, I recommend replacing all the plugs and coils.

I have had 2 COPs go bad. The second time, I replaced all of them.

Removing the intake is fairly easy if you have some repair experience. You need to get an intake gasket set for about $10-15.
The coils run +$75 each for OEM. I went with Ebay aftermarket; 6 coils for about $80.
I recommend replacing the plugs with the exact same brand as original. There is no miracle plug that will give you better performance or mileage. Stay original.

Engine management light stays on

I HAVE A JAG XTYPE 2.0 V6 SPORT, HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT CAME ON AFTER A HARSH GEAR CHANGE (WHEN THE CLUTCH IS NOT FULLY PRESSED), HAD THE FAULT READ AND WAS ADVISED THE GEAR SENSOR HAD TRIGGERED AS THERE WAS A HARSH GEAR CHANGE, HAD THE CODES ALL READ AND CLEARED NOW THE LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITANTLY, AND GOES AWAY AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS, I BELIEVE THIS A COMMON FAULT WITH JAGS SADLY THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO IS EITHER LIVE WITH IT OR REMOVE THE BULB FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
