When was the transmission fluid last changed? It's probably contaminated with something that flows more easily when it's warm. Check the fluid and do a flush and fill if it isn't clean. If you know a reputable transmission mechanic, have him evaluate the fluid before the change - he should be able to tell you if it indicates significant wear on an internal component.

1998 VW Jetta 2.0 automatic transmission hesitates and jerks into gears until car warms up, what could be the problem?

Hi,

This is a common problem. The first thing that I would do is buy and pour a bottle of ****** Honey into the transmission. I know that it's available at AutoZone and perhaps other auto parts stores.

If that doesn't solve the problem, is to have your dealer consider the following solutions in order:

  1. Replacing valve body
  2. Replace transmission control module
  3. Replace transmission
This is the best advice that I can offer without performing a full diagnostic scan.

How to check transmission fluid level

Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.

Where do I check the transmission fluid in a 1996 volkswagen jetta automatic transmission?

VW's are notorious for not having a dipstick in the transmissions. The units are sealed, and can only be check by the VW dealers.

Sorry, my 1998 VW Beetle had the same problem.

Should a 2002 jetta tdi- automatic at 87,000 miles

That specific transmission is known for failure. Sometimes it's premature failure (in your case) and sometimes they have 150k miles, but that specific automatic transmission will always fail.
There are plenty of stories online about premature failure of the 01M VW transmission...

2000 vw jetta 1.8 automatic shifts hard between 3rd and 4th gear

Shop for a rebuilt transmission, or get an estimate from AAMCO for a rebuild job, but it won't be cheap. Get at least 3 estimates before you decide how to proceed. Good luck.
