The bracket that holds the pedals becomes loose sometimes, letting the brake move slightly when you press the clutch. Check for that movement, there is an adjustment for the brake switch, the switch is on the brake pedal under tha dash. It can be pushed in or out which ever is necessary to get the brake lights off.

Why do the brake lights stay on?

Check that switch which should be depressed by the brake pedal when it is up is adjusted properly and has not failed. This switch turns brake lights on EXCEPT when depressed by brake pedal.

How do I fix 1996 Rav4 brake lights always on?

You may have a bad brake liggt switch or just need to adjust it. It is found on the back side of the brake pedal. When the brake is depressed the button should come out when released the button should be depressed telling the lights to come on or go off

My brake light on my dash is constantly on

Look beneath the dash panel at brake pedal assembly. You should see the brake light switch, which completes a circuit to brake lights when you step on the brake pedal. Its likely this switch is malfunctioning. The circuit is closed (power to brake lights) when the brake pedal is not depressed. The circuit is suppose to be open (no power to brake lights) when your foot is off the brake pedal. Unplug the wire connector and unscrew to replace this brake light switch.

As for the knocking sound, is it when the vehicle is in motion? Or even when the vehicle is stopped and idling in park?07060338-db0d-4c14-8a08-ace846c99fb4.jpg

Right and left brake lights do not work when brake pedal depressed. Both tail lamps work as well as both turn signals

Hi,
check the brake light switch located in the brake pedal area. Normal procedure is to remove the two wires and connect a jumper' wire between them, check and see if the rear brake lights operate. Check the brake light switch and see if it is adjustable. If so, re-connect the removed wires, adjust the position of the switch untill the brake lights operate, when the brake pedal is depressed, then secure the brake light switch.

Brake lights stay on even when ignition is turned off.

This happens when the brake light switch is out of adjustment or broken. It is mounted on the brake pedal rod just above your foot. Check to see if the nut has come loose on it and it backed off making the brake lights stay on. To repair it shove the switch towards the rod and snug the nut down. If it keeps doing this then the threads on the switch are stripped and need replaced. Very easy to repair. Feel free to ask me any questions if you run into a problem, Rich

sounds like wireing is shorted together. you need to trace down wires and check for bad spots in wireing. also be sure and check plug if you are set up for trailer lights.

Hi:
You need to check your clutch master cylinder reservour, not your brake cylinder. It is located approx in front of the clutch pedal, outboard of the brake cylinder. If it is low, you need to inspect for leaks around it, the lines connecting it to the clutch slave cylinder that is mounted on the transmission.
