How to Replace an AirConditioner Filter on a 2002 ToyotaAvalon

The air conditioner filter onthe 2002 Toyota Avalon is more commonly referred to as the cabin air filter. The filter does more than just regulate the flow of air: It also filters outpollen, dust, exhaust fumes and air pollution. Because it directly affects thelevel and quality of air coming into the passenger cab through the interior airvents, it can compromise the performance of the air conditioning, as well asthat of the heating system, if not changed at regular intervals.

1. Openthe Avalon's passenger's side door. 2. Open the glove box and removeits contents. 3. Locate the stop screw on the right side ofthe glove box, and remove it with the Phillips-head screwdriver while bracingthe bottom of the glove box. 4. Gently swing the glove box downward andlet it hang upside-down towards the passenger's side floorboard. 5. Locate the white filter frame, now visiblefrom behind the original glove box's position. 6. Push the tabs at each end of the filterframe inward to unlock it, then pull the tray and filter assembly out of thecabin air filter housing. 7. Remove the oldfilter from the tray, then install the new one, making sure to tuck the ends ofthe replacement filter under the tabs on the left and right sides of the tray. 8. Reinsert the trayand filter assembly into the filter housing; push it until the tabsautomatically lock the door of the tray into place. 9. Reassemble theglove box by lifting it up, replacing the stop screw and then returning itscontents before closing it.

I have a 2009 dodge charger. I wanted to change my intake to a cold air intake. i notice there a hole where the original is at on the bottom. Does that need to me covered or not?

in my opinion about cold air intakes, it is actually better to get a K&N drop in air filter.
you will get the same effect except the filter won't be sucking in HP robbing hot air from the engine

Need to change my air filter. Where is it located?

If it's the air filter for your air conditioner, it's located behind the glove box on the passenger side. No tools necessary....just pinch each side of the box until it hinges completely down so that you can see behind it. Unhook the latch for the cabin filter door, pull it out, replace the old filter, and replace all parts. Done!

If you're talking about the engine air filter, under the hood look for the big black box connected to the tube that connects to the engine. You'll see four (4) screws, one on each corner of the box holding it in place. Remove all four screws and lift the hood of the air filter container up so you can get to the filter. Replace the filter (the shape of the filter will determine how it will fit, you can't mess this one up), put the hood back on the box, and replace all four screws tightly. Done!

I highly recommend doing this yourself as the dealership and most garages will run you over $100 with labor and parts...at Wal-mart both filters cost <$30 depending on your vehicle.

Thanks for your answer, but I was asking about the cabin air filter not the engin air intake filter

The cabin air filter is usually located behind the glove box or at the base of the windshield in the cowl area over the HVAC inlet duct. The exact location can be found in the vehicle owner’s manual or a filter reference guide at the auto part store where you purchase the cabin air filter from.
On most Fords, the filter is located under the hood in the cowl area. On Chrysler models, it is located under the dash. On GM products, it might be under the hood (Impala, Lumina and Monte Carlo), under the dash (Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe) or behind the glove box (Venture). On Toyota, Lexus, Nissan and most Honda models, you’ll find the filter behind the glove box. There is no cabin air filter even listed for a 1998 Oldsmobile Regency.

On vehicles where the cabin air filter is mounted under the cowl at the base of the windshield, some disassembly may be required to replace the filter. This may involve removing a plastic cowl cover. The area around the filter usually collects debris, so this area should be cleaned to remove any leaves, bugs or other debris before the old filter is pulled out. This will prevent any contaminants from falling into the HVAC inlet duct.

On vehicles where the filter is located behind the glove box, the glove box may have to be removed to replace the filter. On others, the filter can be accessed from under the dash and pulled out of a slot in the HVAC unit.

Most cabin air filters are flat-panel filters, but some have unusual shapes, so they will fit the HVAC inlet duct. Some filters also come in two sections to make replacement easier.

How do you install the air filter

The first step to changing the air filter is to find it. Before opening the hood open the owner's manual and find the page that reveals locations of under hood service points. There will be an illustration that makes it easy to find where the air filter box is. If there is no owner's manual, open the hood and look for either a football-sized box opposite the battery or large circular unit or flat panel box atop the engine. Note locations and types of fasteners, clips, and hold downs before removing anything. Take care in not damaging the air flow sensor. These are often located near or in the air box. If locating the air filter still proves elusive an Advance Auto Parts professional can assist in finding the air box and selecting the right air filter.

Replace engine air filter

Hi pastore -

Changing an air filter is generally an easy task to perform. Pop your hood and look for the air intake tube. This tube (sometimes more of a labrynth) runs from your throttle body to the "air-box". You can locate the throttle body by having an assistant push and release the gas pedal (while car is off) while you look for moving parts under the hood. The mechanism that moves when the pedal is depressed is the throttle body. Now trace the intake tube (large tube/hose) from the throttle body down to the air-box. The air filter will be located within the air-box. The box usually has a series of clamps that hold a cover in place. Release all of the clamps and lift open the cover to expose the air filter. The air filter should just be sitting in the air box - should be easily removed by lifting the filter element upwards. The new filter should simply drop in place of the old one. Reclamp the cover and you're good to go!.

Please let me know if you need more clarification!

Air conditioning system musty smell when used

There should be a cabin filter. Call the parts store to see if they stock one for your car in particular.

Cabin filters are located in stream of the outside air flowing in. I know on a '99 Galant, you just had to take out the glove box, loosen two screws, and out she slid.

It'll be right near the blower motor, above the passenger's foot rest, behind the glove box. Simple hand tools will do it.

Be careful when pulling it out, as it may have leaves and acorns or fur all over it. Simply slide in the new filter and you're done.

You'll be surprised at how much better it'll smell, and how much harder your A/C and heat will blow without the constriction of a dirty filter.

Most cars have the cabin filters behind the glove box, but if not there, then they'll have them under the hood, on the firewall, on the passenger side. Usually inside a small black plastic box.

If your car DOESN"T have a cabin filter, then the musty smell is stuff that is sitting in the heat/ AC system. You can try spraying pine sol or Febreeze down the air intake hole for the system. Mind you, this is not the same as the air intake for your cars engine!

The air intake for the cabin filter will be on the passenger side, under the hood, most likely under a plastic cowling of sorts.

Good luck!

Changing air filter

On the driver's side under the hood you will see a black plastic box looking case. There is a bolt that is to the front of your van, remove that bolt and remove the plastic air box. Under that you will find your air filter.
Good luck!
