This always happens to my 06 passat when its really cold, im talking 0 or lower. i try not to open the trunk in the winter if i can help it. Its annoying but in the summer i have no problems. I have herd of alot of other people having this problem, VW knows about it and dosnt think its a recall item for somereason, look for your fancy gas door to not open next, i know of 3 people that started having trunk problems and then the fuel door stopped working, not sure if it has anything to do with it or not. but It happend to me and now i have the auto fuel door disconnected from the inside of the trunk.
The trunk issue isnt anything big to worry about it seems intermittent. I found latches and there a little pricey thats why i just deal with it.
I have a 2006 Passat and I also have a problem with my trunk when it is cold...it won't close. My husband holds the hair dryer to the latch until it releases and my other solution is bungie cords.
TRY PULLING THE TRUNK RELEASE INSIDE THE TRUNK WHILE PRYING THE LATCH WITH A SCREWDRIVER

2 options depending on your displays .
Press and hold the service wrench button with the ignition off. While still holding the button, turn your ignition to "on" (but don't start the car). Press the Min clock button and then release the wrench button.
With key off press and hold the 0.0 button on the cluster. With your other hand turn the key to the on position , while still holding 0.0 button, press the minute button for 1 second and you will see the service reset.
cheers

you have to remove the skid plate under the car to see it.

Get it in the warm and spray in some lithium grease into the locking mechanism, this should help with your problem.

Will need a new lock. It's easy if you're mechanically inclined, minimal tools required.

I am having the same problem. It is pity that VW designers don't take this as a problem. Let the buyers suffer.
