Check out the video at 1A auto parts. Just enter Chevy S 10 blazer rear drum brake replacement on U tube and it should pop up. It's very informative. Also the Hanes manual has good instructions on how to do it. The wheel cylinder is a problem for me. The 91 and earlier S10 Blazers have a locking ring that's a real SOB to get out. I cut a couple of coat hangers just past where they curve up so there's a curved end on my homemade brake tool. I plan to put them under the tabs on the lock ring, grab them with a vice grip, then pull straight up. the manual says to pull both sides at the same time. Hopefully it will come out. Good luck to us both! On the 92 and later models there are two small bolts underneath the large bolt on the top of the backing plate. Remove the two small bolts, while taking care not to damage the brake lines. Do not remove the large bolt.

Bleed breaks pedal still spongy

On these old manual brake systems without automatic adjusters you have to set the shoe clearance by turning the adjuster on each shoe out so the shoe is very close to the drum. If there is too much clearance between the shoe and drum the shoe will move as far as it can and never touch the drum, this will make a low or no pedal pressure.

Why is does my rear wheel cylinder keep blowing?

if the brakes over extend the cylinders will pop, make sure you have properly adjusted the brakes, also make sure the emergency brake cable is working and not stuck partway on which will hold the shoes away from the cylinder.
the shoes should be adjusted so that you spin the wheel and it turns twice and stops.

I would suspect you have a problem with ABS control valve if you are sure grease from the rear diff isn't getting on the shoes.

How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier

After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

1994 gmc back left tire break leak

Most likely rellted to the rear wheel cylinder. You need to remove the tire, probably replace the brake shoes if they are wet with fluid, wipe down brake drum with carb or brake cleaner, install new wheel cylinder and put everything else back together. Wheel cylinder is available through most auto parts outlets. Probaby less than $15.

Replaced shoes on 1988 Toyota Pickup 2 wd, breaks will not stop wheels...what could this problem be?

I assume the rear shoes where replaced,was this a problem before replacing the rear shoes?Adjust the rear shoes out to where the wheel drags just a littl when turning it by hand,then if you need to,bleed the brakes,bleed the master cylinder,then the right rear,left rear,then right front,and left front,do not run out of brake fluid during this proccess.

Ford Ranger 1994 breaking system just stopped working. No tension on pedal and on checking no brake fluid.

2 places to check 1. look at the rear wheel backing plates for moisture 2. pull the master cylinder back and look for fluid in the vacuum booster. if leaks at the rear its going to be rear wheel cylinders which will require replacing wheel cylinders and shoes. if the vacuum booster is full replace the master and booster.

I seem to have a problem with my hydro breaking system.Found front worn out while the rear shoes were covered with oil and had not been working for some time.After replacing calipers,rotors,shoes and wheel...

ALL YOU CAN DO IS FLUSH WITH CLEAN FLUID PUMP AND BLEED NOTE: ALWAYS START FROM THE FURTHEST WHEEL FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER AND WORK YOU WAY BACK. SOME TIMES YOU CAN OPEN THE LINES WITH COMPRESSED AIR WHEN YOU DISCONNECT ALL THE LINES FROM THE CYLINDERS

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .

Rear brakes uneven breaking as per mot tester

The Chardes have a diagonal split system, so one of the front discs is plumbed to the diagonally located rear drum.

You may need to check the front brakes too and that they have been bleed properly.

Other common cause of uneven braking are:

seized wheel cylinder;
brake hose obstruction or weakend wall;
weak pull off spring on shoe;
uneven drum roundness;
compensator/proportioning valve dicky.
