2002 Volkswagen Cabrio Logo
Anonymous Posted on Nov 06, 2010

The power windows on my daughter's 2002 VW Cabrio GLX just stopped working last night. All the windows were in the up position, but will not work via any switch. All four windows DO work when raising or lowering using the key in the driver's door. It appears as though the power mirrors also stopped working at the same time. Every other electrical component, including the convertible top, appear to be working as normal. Regarding the windows, the driver's side switches checked out OK, so I'm wondering if this is something safety related, and requires a reset. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. There does not appear to be a window lock button on this car, but I'm wondering if there is a sequence of keying necessary to "unlock" the windows.

  • Anonymous Nov 07, 2010

I think fuse can be ruled out, although I cannot find one for the power widows, because the windows all work using the key in the door. I truly believe it's a safety-lock issue, but I don't know how to reset it.

I appreciate the thought and effort you put into your reply, but let me reiterate the issue and see if it changes your reply.
    1) There is no issue with the door locks. They work fine. Always have, and weren't mentioned in my original post.
    2) The power mirrors do not work, and
    3) The power windows do not work using any of the interior switches. All 4 windows do work when using the key in the door (i.e. turn and hold key and all 4 windows go up or down depending on which way key turned).

This all happened suddenly on thursday evening. Thursday afternoon everything worked fine.

    Thanks.

The power windows and the mirrors use the same circuit breaker but either one can be causing the other to be off. I guess you mean the power locks work with the key not the windows as they don't work no matter what you do but the locks don't work with the inside switches only the key. Right? Your windows don't go up or down with the key in the door? Just the locks. windows arnt working at all. The central locking system and the power door locks use the same power qindow module for logic but the key switch is an override for the locks and it'll work indepentanly of the window module. So the window relay is in te main fuse box, Just above the main relay and the string of fuses the are 5 fuses just above the fuse box that aren't in the fuse box there's a 20 amp (yellow ) likly ti be the forth one from the left going right it's the power window fuse. It should only be hot with the key on. ( your locks work with the key off, only with the key in the door) This fuse powers the relay and also the lock switches inside the car. The fuse can be good and powers not getting to it. The fuse can be bad and something overpowered it in the cigar lighter or power asseriory. The ciger lighter won't work either. If the fuse is cold ( no power with a test light ) The main fuse next to the battery at the main battery connector might be blown or dirty. The cigar lighter won't work either and if this is good the circuit thogh the ingtion switch could have failed but the fuses are much more likly. The fuse can be good and its connection in the fuse holder can be bad. Don't forget a fuse can (look) good and be bad. (look) at fuses with a test light ( ice pick like tool with a ground wire with a clip wit a clear handleand the light inside the handletoch the tip to a powered idem and the light will light if the groundclip is connected to a good ground) You can get a test light at the auto or elecrtical section at hardward and dept stores and of course auto parts stores and tool strores, even gas stations. Find that thepower is going though the fuse and now were going to have to look harder. Everytime you mess with something test the windows to see if they work as you can fix the problem by just reconnecting things or even moving a dirty fuse or pushing on it to make abetter connection. Safty interlock like you sujest isn't on this car but is on the newer models ( your thinking right ) The Audi has it, the bug didnt get it yet.

The key in the door uses all the time power and the inside switches use key on power the fuse is above the fuse box ( not in the fuse box third or forth one from the left 20 amp ( yellow ) and is pnly on with the key turned to run. The key in the door ishotall the time.

In the fuse box under the hood look for a fuse labled ACC or Pwin or p window,, Change that fuse, there is a diagram under the cover of the fuse box saying which fuse is which

  • Anonymous Nov 07, 2010

there is a fuse.. the safty lock triggers a rely that activates the windows. So your sure there is a relay and a fuse, the fuse is labled ACC and so is the relay (accessory)..

  • Anonymous Nov 07, 2010

I still am leaning to the ACC fuse.. The interior switch is on a seperate relay from the ones on the key. The windows , mirrors etc are all considered accessories hence I'm leaning to the ACC fuse or ACC relay.. Trust me its there its labled accessory, PS there is also one in the kick panel under the dash.

Try disconnecting the battery and join the leads together for a minute or two ,but thinking about this i seem to remember having this problem on VW passat and it was something to do with remote switch on the key ,i think i had to turn ignition on then press the window lock switch and then turn it off again and they all worked as they should but i cannot remember exactly what i done as i work on so many different makes and types from generators to container fridges with onan gas engines to cars and even chain saws and strimmers for the neighbours not forgetting these tuned up hairdriers buzz bikes like vespa and now the chinese stuff as well ,come back norton and BSA

2002 VW Cabrio GLX while driving car there was a loud bang and it automatically came to a sudden screeching stop as if the car was thrown into park

Can you start it and it runs fine but in park or nuetral? If so the issue is related to something on the drive axel. It could be a CV joint or bearing.

On my 2002 vw cabrio, the drivers side front power window works intermittently - mostly won't work. Passenger side is fone as are the rear power windows. Is this a switch problem?

The most common problem with Cabrio auto windows is the Window regulator. Each window has it's own. My wife also owns a 2002 Cabrio, that had a mis-behaving window driver window and the passenger was locked in the up position. After inspecting the drivers window, I found one of the cable roller guides was broken, causing the cable to snag when using the window open / close, and resulting in the window seeming to have a mind of it's own. I had a local garage order the regulator for me, and then I disassembled the drivers door and installed the new regulator (problem is now solved).
The passenger window was bound up, I also had to remove the regulator and let loose the tension in the cable system by carefully removing the cover over the cable roller. This window works fine now as well.

2002 VW Passat GLX AWD, stereo stopped working

HI,
Passats can be reset if the radio is pulled out and the fuse on the back is removed. Wait for 2 mins, reinsert the fuse and turn the radio on. If this doesn't work, please take it to the dealer for the unlocking of the code, for which he may charge you some fee.

Do let me know if it was helpful.
