I have a 2008 camry Le that the gearshift gets stuck in the PARK position and has to be manually released by taking off the small cover on the console by the gearshift and releasing it out of park. This problem started after I took it back to the dealer to fix all the recalls. Could they have done something wrong or what could the problem be? How can this be fixed?

I would ask them and see what they say. Should not cost anything to ask.

SOURCE: gearshift lever is locked in park and will not

the shift solenoid needs to be replaced
it is the unit that releases the shifter when you put your foot on the brake upon shifting into gear
the solenoid will be located in the area of the shifter

Testimonial: "Thanks for the information. Great respone timing. I thought it might be some type of electrical sensor or solenoid so your information really helped."

SOURCE: automatic gearshift stuck in park

The release for the shifter is tied to the brake lites, check to see if the brake lights work, if they don't then test the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal, if it lights a test lite when you press the brake it is ok, in that case you need to check the little solenoid that pulls the cable to unlock the shifter, it is bolted to the top of the steering column, in order to get at it you will have to unbolt the column and drop it dow.

Something has come loose in your center console.  You need to readjust the switch for the gear selector and the parking brake.

How can I can get the gear shift leaver to move from park position

On the facia panel of your gearshift there is a small black cover located at the rear of the panel ,on some models there is a hole to the right of the gearshift, forward of the facia panel . Put a thin screw driver down this hole , you will need to feel around and locate the button/lever, it is sprung loaded and can be pushed down with the screw driver . It will release the gearshift but it is advisable to see technician as mine was caused from faulty wires on trailer and had blew a fuse to .

1997 oldsmobile cutlass stuck in park until car warms up

There is a safety switch inside the gearshift assy. (below where you shift the gear handle) this safety switch locks the gearshifter in park until you press the brake pedal. pressing the brake pedal is supposed to release it. obviously it's not, so there's soda, coffee, or other substances making it sticky, or it could be just worn out. Take the cover plate off & look for this plastic piece attached to a cable(covered in black plastic) if it needs cleaning, use alot of warm water & a shop-vacuum. if cleaning doesn't help, then replace the cable (may be part of the shifter mechanism.)

The gearshift on my 2005 hyundai sonata gearshift is locked. where is the release button?

The release is located inside of the shifter housing. It can be accessed through a small hole, possibly covered with a small plastic cover, near the shifter. Insert punch into hole, depress release and shift out of park.

Sebring wont get out of park

Newer cars REQUIRE you to press on the brake to get into gear. If the switch at the brake pedal is not working, or the solenoid at the gearshift is not working. The shifter is stuck. You MUST have a little slot by the shifter covered with a small cover. Check your manual, a key in that slot releases the shifter should you have the above problem or the battery is dead and no power to that release solenoid.

Car will not go out of park 2002 mountaineer is stuck in park - will crank but cannot put in gear

CLICK HERE FOR YOUR OWNERS MANUAL in PDF format.

Check your shift interlock switch on the brake pedal. If it is out of alignment or has failed the shifter will not unlock to enable a gear selection.

Also - a fuse may be blown, or you may have a taillight out.

You can manually unlock it in emergency situations.
Taken from P.181 of the manual......

Brake-shift interlock
This vehicle is equipped with a brake-shift interlock feature that prevents
the gearshift lever from being moved from P (Park) when the ignition is
in the ON position unless brake pedal is depressed.
If you cannot move the gearshift lever out of P (Park) with ignition in
the ON position and the brake pedal depressed:
1. Apply the parking brake, turn ignition key to LOCK, then remove the
key.
2. Locate the access cover plate to
the brake-shift interlock override. It
is located on the underside of the
steering column.
3. Rotate the access panel
(counterclockwise) with a flat head
screw driver until it is lined up to
the access hole in the open position.
4. Insert a tool (or screw driver) into the access hole to override the
brake-shift interlock. Apply the brake and shift into Neutral.
5. Return the cover plate (rotate
clockwise) to the closed position.
Start the vehicle.

If it is necessary to use the above procedure to move the gearshift lever,
it is possible that a fuse has blown or the vehicle’s brakelamps are not
operating properly. Refer to Fuses and relays in the Roadside
emergencies
chapter.
