Its the speed sensor located on the drivers rear side of the transfer case, it has a 2 wire plug, the sensor screws into the tcase and is really easy to replace and fairly cheap at any parts if you buy the new one first it will help you find it by matching it up its a common problem with this vehicle, when it goes out the speedo quits and the computer doesn't know your moving so it doesn't shift the trans properly

1999 k1500 4l60E with push button 4wd

bad VSS (chevy) k1500 not Suburan. 4th gear dead.
NOT TOLD ALL 4wd or 2wd truck, and matters huge on VSS.
5.0L? no car mileage told or on tranny..
the scan tool tells you VSS is dead.,veh.speed,sensor.
the transmission shifts by lots of variables and FOR SURE SPEED, is one, so the would't cause is dead wrong;.
first thing to do is learn what box is there. (real name)
GM car is GM transmissions sure but which exact one.
and why do you ignore the speedo/tacho, they must work.
chevy 1999 k1500 4L60E RPO Codes M30
4L60e electrically shifted by the TCM brain (it or PCM/TCM)_
to shift electronically many things most work
VSS, and all speed sensors, and shift solenoids.
and more this code smacks of cam timing errors top me.
Trouble Code: P1345 (5.0L V8 VIN M Auto)
Crankshaft Position (CKP)-Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation( < this word means OUT OF TIME in geek speak) the PCM predicts next cam pulse and is way the heck off time, and tells you it is and does not lie. OMG it has an old Distributor and CMP is bad or distributor ws never timed correctly as the SM directs.
SM= service manual.
this error can not be ignored, but back to transmission problem in drive
To shift up the TCM brain must know speed
in drive upshifts fail, hard.
I am reading your SM now. learning what version this 4L60 is
and all sensors and if it has line pressure control solenoid.
to get the VSS DTC error one must drive long time to get it.
but the speedo did not lie to you , VSS is dead.
yes it has PCsol PCS solenoid that sets main tranny line pressure just before the shift, ( 3 soles to shift , not 2)
as you go higher gears the main line pressure needed to do so needs lots more pressure
from 75PSI to 175 PSI in drive. if not gears fail.

now 2 photo to prove all this.
first is VSS then 2nd is PCsol.

1997 k1500. I started it today, negative temps, and I don't have 1st, or overdrive.

unplug the trailer first to see if it is something in it''s wiring.
not going into OD could just be that the load is too much to handle in OD.
speedo and tach I would start by checking fuses.
sounds like the problems are all related.

1993 chevy k1500 transmission problem

Do you mean start the car in drive? if so that problem is inhibitor switch. Other shift problems can be caused by TPS (throttle posistion sensor) if applicable

I have a 1993 Chevy Z71 Automatice with Overdrive Upon excelleration it hesitates to shift but if I left off the gas and try again it works.

Normaly overdrive kicks in from 55 to 60 m.p.h. it sounds like its the tps, throttle positioning sensor.

it's attached to the left side of the carburetor passenger side, on a diesel same side. if the tps gets

loose, gets water in it or is bad you will have a problem shifting to overdrive. If you have done any

kind of engine work. and if it was removed it will need to be adjusted.good luck!

I have a 93 Chevy Suburban 1500 and the Transmission won't shift into any gear. I have an 1983 Chevy Suburban Transmission that is still good. Can I use the 83 Transmission in my 93 Suburban?

Not without a little adapting. The 1993 has a 4l60e which is electronically controlled and has shift solenoids. If the 83 is an overdrive it is a 700r4 which is the same trans but not electronic. If you put it in the speedo wont work and you will need to install a T.V. cable so the transmission will shift. The 93 won't go forward or backwards?

Car will not shift into overdrive

As a response to solution #1 these cars do have an overdrive while in D-4, mine was shifting in and out at 70 mph until it finally quit and the rpm is now 3100 at 70 mph insted of 2700. The car still shifts 4 full times just not the fifth-OD. I still can't find out what fixes this problem either.

Overdrive Problems

On top of engine as your facing it, there should be what looks like a temp. sending unit with a 2 wire plug on it, chg. that, it sends a signal to trans. when it gets warm enought to shift to overdrive. If trans shifts fine but won't go into overdrive thats most likely the problem.

Speedo stopped working last night. Stuck in first!

Your Trans should be the 4L60. If your speedometer quits working and the truck won't shift out of 1st gear, the "Speed Sensor" is probably bad or the wiring is bad where it plugs into the sensor. The sensor will be towards the back of the trans or on the tail shaft. An easy way to test if the wiring is bad at the plug is to pull on the wire 3" or 4" from the plug and watch closely to see if it stretches. If there is any stretch the wire inside the plastic sheath is broken.
