Have a 2001 bmw x5 radio has power goes throu channels but has no sound. any ideas. thank you rich
Hello, I've the same problem... however my sound is likely there when I restart the X5 after an hour or so, but it is as likely to disappear during the minutes that follow, often when the car is shaken.
There is then a fair chance to get sound back as soon I drop the phone after a phone call (but it does not always work).
--> My guess is that it is the line of the Phone "mute" signal that brings every sound source down thru a bad contact or so.
BMW wanted to replace the radio for 900 €. Hmm a lot of money for a bad conatct if my guess is right.

So far I've Googled the following:disconnect the Radio under the spare wheel
disconnected 30 amp fuse No 72 on right hand side of the boot, in case of doubt replaced it and all is well!
disconnect the AMP located under the DVD player
put some contact spray into the connectors and reconnect everything
cross your fingers.. it should work again.

Hi, me again, after having gone to practice, here my findings that solved my issue:
This solved my issue. I haven't touched to the AMP and Radio connectors.disconnect the 3 Amp (not 30 A) fuse labeled N° 72. it is the first in the row, located on the right side of the boot (opposite side of the DVD player)
clean the contacts (use a knife to get the oxidation off making the metal shining),
then put the fuse back.

It may have been burned down or amplifier outputs for speakers
Thanks Garry. Just bought a 2003 X5 that is in beautiful condition and low mileage at a great price. Get it home after driving it 800klms from where I bought it from and no sound from T.V (but working),radio or CD. Also no power light near knob working on dash.My son advised me to look up on the internet. Garry's advice on removing No.72 fuse and clean it was the cheapest fix I've ever had on a car. Thanks mate.
I had the same problem with my 2005 X5, everything worked on the screen except the sound, remove fuse No.72 from the right hand side fuse holder in the boot, (should be a 30amp fuse), either fit in a new one or just simply rub down the metal blades on the fuse with a bit of sandpaper. Replace the fuse and hey presto!!! All back to normal!! What i thought was going to cost me silly money didn't actually cost me a single penny!!!!!!
I have the same problem..i owe a 2005 x5 and have no sound..where is the no. 72 fuse? What you mean by boot? Where is 72 fuse located? Please help.

I have the same problem with the sound on my x5, if i turn the radio on before i start the engine it sometimes works, but when the engine starts it trys to connect to the bluetooth and mutes everything (pls connect) i have just bought the 2002 model and have no manual, so haven't a clue how to even use the bluetooth, any ideas on how to keep the radio on would be apprecaiated.
Thanks
Emma
have tried the above but no luck so far still no sound on x5 bmw 2001
I have a BMW X5 2003 plate. The car radio does not seem to switch on, hence no sound. Sat nav, TV and the computer is still functioning but all the buttons on the right hand side of the system seem to be dead. I have checked all the fuse in the glove box and in the boot right hand side console but no fault found. Please help... my last action will be to try and disconnect the wires from the battery for 15-20 min to reboot the system but not sure if this will work. Any resolvable advise welcome.
Thanks
