I have a 1999 Suzuki Esteem that is giving off the code P0340.Oreilly auto parts is telling me that my car has two separate sensors. Can someone please advise me. 1999 Suzuki Esteem 1.8L GLX Wagon.

why ask a clerk? that??
J18 engine has 2 key sensors,
CKP behind the flywheel (aaahhhcraaappppp)
and
CMP on rear of cam,
so what is 340,well the service manual is clear
why not ask it , NOT/clerks.
340 is CAM, or CMP sensor.
lucky you.
no pull transmissions!!

btw ,crank sensor sets DTC p0335

if not wanting to guess, and get rumors and lies.
ever see this?
posted 100s of times. the real deal.
just $4

P0340 and Tach doesn't work

this is easy, 340 is fully cover here
http://www.alldata.com/
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit
the sensor is bad/dead or intermittent.
the modern engines, (some) can run a while with one or both RPM
sensors bad.(not both same time)
there are 2, the CMP and the CKP.
crank, and cam in english.
on some cars, the ECU goes to limphome when one dies.
btw , both need to work for OBD2 MISFIRE to work.
use alldata, look up the code for your year, then look up
Diagnosing, CMP ,

some cmp on suzuki are very smart, they have dual sensors inside.
this allows limp home to work better.
the cmp is at the rear of the cam on most suzuki.

Error code 340 & 457

  • P0340 - Camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction.
  • P0457 - Evaporative emission control system leak detected (fuel filler cap loose/off)

There is a bulletin #0398 posted on 05/12/2003 for P0457 - Malfunction indicator lamp (mil) illumination with diagnostic trouble codes p0442, p0455, p0456, p0457, p1442 or check fuel cap lamp illuminated with diagnostic trouble code p0457.

I'd suggest checking with your local dealer, as it may be a fix that is covered by the dealer.

My 2002 pt cruiser died while I was driving first the oil light came on then it just died! I just had the oil changed 3 days prior to it dying some of the codes I received were 0340 1684 1685...

P0340 is cam position sensor. P1685 is for the key(has a chip in it) P1684 is battery has been disconnected. If the engine will still crank then codes P1684 & P1685 are probably old codes. So if the car will still crank, lets forget about those codes and focus on P0340 A bad cam position sensor will cause the engine to die and not allow it to start back up. Replace the cam position sensor and clear the code and the car should start up.
