To make a belt adjustment, you need to loosen the bolts on the power steering pump. Under the pump, you will see a long bolt that runs sideways. You loosen the bolt that locks that bolt from turning,(on the end nearest the block)then turn it till the pump moves and tightens the belt. (1" deflection at the longest run is about right). Then tighten up everything you just loosened.

Belt squeals so replaced the belt and still does it.sprayed wd 40 on it and stopped for about 10 sec. and come back

do not spray any lubricant or cleaner on belts. they are rubber made.
you can use a dry soap if you can remove belt.

on 4.0 engines it can be tightened a bit. there is a bolt close to steering pump. very long bolt. it is located diagonally and it tightens the belt.

How do i adjust a serpentine belt on a 96 jeep cherokee

You don't. If the belt looks frayed or otherwise damaged you replace it. There is however a belt tensioner which kind of automatically applies tension to the belt which removes the need to adjust belts like the old v belts with the adjustor brackets. You shouldn't have more than 1/2 to 1" or belt play otherwise if so your tensioner may be going out and need to be replaced.

How do you replace a serpentine belt for 1996 jeep cherokee sport?

You need to loosen up the power steering pump and un-adjust the jack bolt that runs under it. Then just follow the diagram on the sticker on the radiator support. If you can't find the sticker, I'll give you the routing if you ask. to tighten the belt just tighten the jack bolt and lock down the bolts you loosened on the pump. Tight is when you have about one inch deflection in the longest run of the belt,
Loose is better than too tight as you can re-tighten it if necessary. Too tight will damage pulley bearings.

How do I tighten serpentine belt and to what spec?

Your 1996 cherokee has a self adjusting tensioner. If it's bad or if the belt is worn, it might make a squealing noise. You cannnot adjust it. You can only replace the auto tensioner when it gets old and weak.

How to adjust serpentine belt on 1991 jeep cherokee limited

you are incorrect. on a 91 jeep cherokee the belt is adjusted pivoting the power steering pump assembly. loosen the top bolt on the PS bracket, the 2 bolts on the back of it, and the bolt holding the adjustment bolt tight (the long bolt threaded into the bracket under the pump on the drivers side. turn the long bolt (adjustment bolt) to tighten or loosen the bolt.

How do I remove belt from a 1998 jeep cherokee i6

Hi Red,

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Locate the tensioner pulley. It's one of the smaller ones and is mounted on a spring loaded arm. It's job, as the name suggests, is to keep the belt tight. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt off the alternator or A/C compressor
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • The belt is off
On to the next hurdle,

Best regards,
Mike
