How to change a Cv joint on a 1997 Pontiac Grandam

While the car is still on the ground remove the half shaft nut then jack the car up and support it with jack stands and remove the tire. after you get the tire off you may have to remove the break caliper and the rotor, if you have to do this now. Remove the lower ball joint nut and break apart the ball joint with a large pry bar by prying down on the lower a frame. grab the steering knuckle with both hands and pull until the half shaft is free from the bearing hub assembly. then grab the half shaft and give it a good tug to remove it from the trans axle, you may have to pry it out with a small pry bar wedged between the inner cv joint and the trans axle. at this point I would replace the entire half shaft it is cheaper and a lot easier than replacing the cv joint. installation is reversed but be careful of the splines when installing the half shaft back into the trans axle and the bearing hub.
