Yesterday my 2000 Subaru Outback Limited began to sputter a little. I noticed it between 2,000-3,000 rpms and when going uphill. When accelerating it bucked. The Check Engine Light then came on and started blinking but turned off after I pulled over to check it. I am afraid to drive it to Auto Zone to use their CEL computer because I might not make it. Any ideas of what this could be? I changed the oil a week ago and used synthetic this time instead of conventional, could this be part of the problem?

SOURCE: How do you reset engine check light on 2004 Subaru Outback?

u can clear/reset the check engine light either with a scan tool, hit clear codes, or u can just disconnect the battery, the scanner clearing method is preferred as disconnecting the battery can cause temporary stalling issues.

SOURCE: 2000 subaru outback trunck won't unlock/open

Is it a lift back or window and tail gate? Either way, there is a little hole on the inside for the escape hatch. Take a small pin, wire, coat hanger, push it straight in, it should pop the window, door, whichever, might be a small button over the hole, that way you can get the door lock fixed without smashing the lock off. I never tried mine , but I know all cars have them now. Check it out.

Sounds like you will find a code that says Misfire cyl 4. Or it could be any cyl. Most of the time it is worn out spark plugs. that's the easy fix. If it does the same thing after new plugs then you may have burnt valves which is not an unusual problem with Subaru and quite expensive to fix. From $1500 to $2200 depending where you go for repairs.

As long as the oil level is still good then, no, the oil can never affect and engine this way. The flashing check engine light means you have an active misfire. Which is most commonly caused by over due spark plugs or a shorted plug, old or bad plug wires, a bad ignition coil, a bad injector. If you pull the plug wires off of the coil and it still has that shiny gold/brass color then the coil is most likely ok, but if it has a bit of light greenish power on those same surfaces then you need a new coil. Also, if you do have the 2.5L single overhead cam engine, then make sure you know if your timing belt was done at 105,000 miles. Because if the timing is off due to an old belt, then that might be causing it as well. If you suspect a bad injector, then I would run an injector flush on it or just some fuel injector cleaner additive through your fuel tank and hopefully it will clean out the injectors.
I hope this info helps!~subyguru~

The ABS,Brake Light,Battery light go on and off sporadically while driving.Does this indicate an Alternator failure or a sensor/computer problem?

yes it's most likely a alternator problem, usually the internal diode bridge breaks causing all lights you mentioned to come on,if this happens at a idle open the hood and remove green connector on alt.if lights go out you've found the problem
