The reason there are two timing marks on the balancer is because you can line up the top mark with the mark on the timing cover and the bottom mark with the mark on the block. This is top dead center for number 1 cylinder you dont need to crank the motor over with your finger over the no 1 plug hole or watch the valve springs on number one cylinder anymore now they have made it simple just line up the marks and you are at tdc no1 cylinder if you want diagrams email me. Good luck!
Hi mark this is john lapier . You see im not the person with the problem , Iposted an answer about a year and a half ago that was incorrect about the 4.3 timing gear alinment . Witch should be at #4 cylinder TDC . The problem is this somehow you got this sulition and saw it was incorrect . The problem im haveing is some clown that i disagreed with one of his sulitions on this site sent me an infected E,mail im not mentioning any names .So now my home site isn't working correctly .And im dealing with it now and will reslove it You seam to know a great deal about chevy engines i have read some of your sulitions and am inpressedso i think we may see each others sulitions from time to time and if we disagree thats cool i know these vehicles well to and am open to any knowlage avabile. Just watch out for the small mined ones that know more any body else in the world and have to get even with those who dare to undergurit them .The site can't protect you or me have good antiveries on your computer
Hey John thats cool I just saw all this stuff about #4 TDC I have never heard of #4 needing to be at TDC anyways the new motors have the two marks to allow the technician to bring up to tdc on #1 without cranking motor over to do this if you were working on cars back then it was a pain in the **** to find tdc so this is definately an improvement on the engineers at GM's part Just remember if chrome wont get you home then flat black will get you back home or something like that ;)
Hay mark im not realy sure what is going here but what im seeing on my screen is your answers however its saying i posted them . I recantly had aproblem with some jurk who had an answer about a honda powerwasher engine that he answered witch was wrong so i added a coment respectfuly saying to the person who was asking the question that i had to disagree with the other experts answer . Well the other expert didn't like that so he send back a responce to my E.mail saying i ramble to much but it was an infected E.mail my security stoped it right away Now the problem is are sites are crossed some how Im working with fixya to correct this problem i just need to send the security reports to them .I know who the **** is and can prove it .So we will have to see what happens . Your sulitions are well worth reading your no BS artest but i know this vehicle as good as anyone and also have no time for BS my sultions come out of the factory manauls i don't answer things that i don't know Sorry for the confuesitionand hopefuly i can get this problem strightened soon .Best regardes John
please send me diagram on timing marks for 4.3 vortech. i replaced the distributer but it is still not firering.:(

The timeing on this vehicle is controled by the computer and you realy can;t change it Unless you;ve taken out the distutor shaft Then it may not be on the correct tooth There is two marks on the harmonic balancer but there gust referance points seeing you can;t adjust the distutor shaft like you would on an older stile engine So if you put timing light on it the timing will move between the marks depending engine temp and rpm;s
Yes I pulled distributor to replace bad intake gaskets and i did not mark the rotor.
Ok this is what you need to do. First you have to get #1 cylinder to top dead center TDC. Take out first spark plug on left the passenger side this is #1cylinder. Next you need to rotate engine you can do this by putting a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt. Put your finger in #1spark plug hole when you start to feel pressure you know your on the compression storke you have to let the piston reach the top of storke you may slide a small tool into plug to gauge when piston is at the top of the storke. Now trace the plug wire for #1back to the dist. cup. take the cap off. WHEN DIST. SHAFT IS INSTALLED CORECTLY the rotor striker should line up with #1 plug wire on the dist. cap If you have a problem getting the distibutor shaft to fully seat give the key a vary quick click to start i mean like 1 second and the shaft will drop right in place Also remember the gear is spiral cut it will rotate as it slides down so the rotor should pisitioned slightly counter clockwise from you want it to end up
This information is not accurate the two marks are to line up the engine on tdc no 1 cylinder. there are also two marks on the distributor to line it up before droping it in the engine the timing is set by the computer so there is no adjustment if you want diagrams email me
Im sorry but i did not post this sultion i don't know who did or how it ended up on my page but its relitively correct although the 4.3 engine has a problem with whats called crank shaft wip .If driveing on a rough road the crank shaft will move its a disgin issue not enough main bearings its also an extremely heavy vehicle and has problems going up steep hills with setting codes off P0300 OR P0304 RANDOM MISFIRE OR #4 CYLINDER MISFIRE . The problem you may be haveing is the distubtor shaft gear or the shaft it self wares and makes it impossable for the computer to know where the timing make is at any given time. Seeing how the distubtor shaft is not adjustable then the pisition of the drive gear is extermaly important and if its off by even a half degree do to ware the computer will never work correctly
im having a missfire issue on my 97 blazer i have replaced the spider for the injection and did a full tune up and it still runs really rough and has a missfire.. when i drive it..it cuts out kinda and has a backfire sound in the intake.. could you possibly point me in a direction to fix it i cant afford to take it to a shop again

I’m having the same issue on my 97 gmc seirra. Misfires and backfires sounds like it’s from the intake. I removed distributor whole thing and the sensor in it. Now I can’t get the truck to run it’s is off timing now. But it initially started losing power and backfiring and running real rough. Any advice would be great full please

Yes your right James i made a mistake its #4 cylinder you need at top dead center to alinge the timeing marks .I spaced out because onwer one my self a 96 sorry about that but i do know pretty much everything anybody would ever want to know about this vehicle
John the timing marks are so that you can set no 1 cyl at tdc and there are also two marks that line up on the distributor so you can set the initial time without the guesswork. The most difficult part is lining up the oil pump drive with the distributor drive gear, you may need mechanics mirror and a long screwdriver for this.
