change mechanics --or bring back and have them fix correctly when they did the engine work doesnt sound like was done correctly and now you may have a bigger problem

sounds like you might have lost the altanator. Check the battary to see if it is very low, if so it was running of the battery and not the altanator. try charging the battery and see if it will run. If it does, checkthe voltage on the battery. it should be above 13 volts when runnig.If not it is the altanator.

If you have individual injectors, try switching one with another and see if the code moves-also consider the possibility that you have low compression in that cylinder. you might try to reset the ecu by disconnection of the battery for 5 minutes, and clean terminals and battery lugs, then reconnect it and let it idle so sensors 'relearn'-you should let it idle for a few minutes, then drive it gently for a couple more, then normally-adaptive ecu will relearn all sensors, and it may fix the CEL issue.

Welcome to the world of BMW's. return the car to the seller. you got a bad one. You got an electrical short draining the battery. Bring a blank check and sign it over to the dealer. They're going to have to run through the entire electrical system to find the short. That work alone is worth more than the a used up 2001 325i.

You'll need to find out the code that is related to the check engine light. Auto Zone or Advanced Auto can get the codes from the car. That should get you in the general direction.
