For starters its an automatic transmission 2002 gti 1.8t. When it is in gear and im stopped it jerks forward a little bit or when im in reverse it jerks. When I drive and the gears are shifting they slip sometimes usually going from 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 5th when it does actually **** it jerks forward quite a bit.

My Saturn did the same thing - twice. Where the clutch cables connects to the shifter box(??) there is a little clip that had fallen off. The first time this happened, the mechanic told me that I needed to replace the whole shifter box - costing me $400 dollars. The second time - about two years later a different mechanic charged me $15 for the clip and labor.

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.

It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

Purchase a gear shift repair kit for your car. They are pretty cheap. About 20 bucs. The ball and bushings are probably worn.

im not telling you what to do because it could be a bad transmission and an easy fix but I cant tell without looking at it , but if its a hard fix just go to a reliable junkyard and get another
