It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks. If you do buy this, please purchase it thru this link. The cost is the same, but i get credit for the sale and im trying to earn my money back, as you will be able to do if you buy fron NewRockies and join the free affiliate program. Thanks
----- http://newrockies.ca?ap_id=judd0081 ----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites.

It works for:
Any GM or Isuzu Vehicle with VATS or PASSKey or PASSLock security systems.
If your car has the chip in the key or in the lock cylinder, then you can save it with this Full Bypass.

Car starts with a jumper wire to starter but will not start with key

Not sure if I follow your question completely.
If the car is a GM model and has the VATS system the system will keep the engine from cranking and starting.
The lock cylinder reads a chip in the key to allow the engine to crank and start.

Remove broken key from gm ignition lock

Physically removing a piece of an ignition key from the tumbler is practically impossible. The tumbler is filled with spring loaded tabs which raise and lower against EVERY notch on a key. That resistance will fight your every motion as you try to back the key remnant out. As one tab releases, the next in line raises into the vacancy just created. GM, even with the "fob"/ chip installed in most of their keys, also put greater anti-theft detail into their ignition tumblers. IF this is an ignition lock that has a chip sensor, the practical repair is a complete key/tumbler replacement. This isn't a DIY repair. It will involve removing the steering wheel and column covers, air bag, AND re-coding the vehicle computer to accept and recognize the new key/chip code. The re-coding CAN be done at home. Immediately after the new tumbler is installed, leaving the ignition in the "run" position for 1 hour, will re-code the antitheft in the computer.

I have a 1991 Firebird and lost the key, i had a key made from the dealer and the dealer could not find the vats key code said it didnt have one, so he cut a key to the specs provided by gm and the key...

You can bypass the vats rather easily. You can also try buffing that key down a little bit. As with any key, sometimes they are cut too sharp and need to be filed or buffed down a little to mimic normal wear and tear. Here is a link on the Vats security system.

My egnition will not allow me to put key in all the way

The lock cylinder must be bad.
Unfortunatly being an 89 it should be a cylinder with the VATS key. They are a bit costly. Around $75 if I remember correctly. Then if a VATS bypass has not been done (not really a bypass of the VATS, just a bypass of the key's resistor) then you need to get a key made with the proper resistance for the new lock. The bright side is the new lock cylinders come with a key already cut so it just needs a copy or thkey with the proper resistor.

I don't know if non VATS key cylinders fit into the column properly because I have only done the repairs with the right parts.

I think RockAuto.com has the proper lock cylinders at a desent price. If you do a web search for rock auto discount codes you can save a few bucks as well.

The ignition is stuck on the ON position on my '91 firebird. The key will not turn forward or backward but the key is able to be pulled out. Need help please!

Does it have air bags? If not remove horn cover, you need replace the key tumbler, with key in ignition you should see a small tab ( metal) button that you need to push in and at the same time kinda turn the key just slightly and pull out. have new ingnition tumbler with you and install is basically the reverse.

Security light is blinking - GMC 2500 van won't start

replace the ignition lock cylinder, that should cure the problem, but u will need to have the VATS module re-programmed to accept the new VATS key resistance value, this is preformed by the dealer only.
