When trying to start the car, it clicks. It jumped once. Would not jump a second time. Took it to a retired mechanic who fixes on the side. He raised it up and it started as he tapped on the starter. He said it looks like a big job to replace this. Any insights?
Kinda.
alldata calls for 7.5 hrs. to replace it. so that means around 10 to 12 hrs. for somebody that isnot familiar with bmw and don't have the tools for it.
sorry

I got this free Pdf manual from reliable-store for free and I don't think Ive visited a mechanic or fixya for help for more than 3-4 times out of the 20 times I fixed the chipper in these 4 years
How long did you charge the battery? If was completely dead a five minute jump won't do it. Let battery JUMP charge for at least 20 minutes and have other person helping you do the jump rev his engine while you start the beamer.
try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.
DME relay is faulty, its seperate from the ecu and was most likely fried when the ecu went........did anyone try to run an on board diagnostic code pull?
Year of car is 2004 not a 2005, but didn't have the option is pick that!
