Hello
Bank one is the engine cylinder bank near the engine firewall (see diagram). The bank one sensor one is the Oxygen sensor (O2) located in the exhaust pipe just of the engine cylinder bank at rear and before the Catalytic Converters.
p0136 means: 02 sensor malfunction( bank 1 sensor 2) your DOWNSTREAM oxygen sensor has malfunctioned. In other words, the one that is on BANK #1, AFTER the catalytic converter. bank 1 is where number 1 cylinder is.
If it was the upper o2 this is the one. This does not mean the o2 is bad, check the spark plugs and boots, and fuel pressure. The fuel ratio is not correct on that bank.
On the dual overhead cam 3.0 liter you must remove the upper intake plenum to access the right bank spark plugs and wires.
On the single cam 3.0 liter I have seen guys remove the wiper cowel to gain access, but I just reach around the drivers side behind the throttle body.
I have the same codes on my 2003 Explorer 4.0 Liter V6. I was told many things from bad fuel pressure to bad computer. One peice of advice was correct. Bad air fuel mixture caused by a vacuum leak. The leak could be from a bad vacuum hose or the intake gasket. Mine turned out to be a hole in an elbow vacuum hose on the top of the engine, passanger side, near the intake. Fixed and runs great with no more check engine light.
many o-2 sensors go bad after about 60,000 miles they will cost you gas mileage, they tell computer engine is lean and causes more fuel to be dumped in when not needed--go to autozone if it is 96 and above they will scan it free give u possible causes and explanations! (former autozone manager) most fords o2 cost from 50-80 dollars jsmiles4012
