1997-2000 Ford Windstar 3.8
Heater Core
Inspect ' Replace
Drain the cooling system

Heater Housing

The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core. Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It is therefore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core.
Heater Core Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain access to the heater core. Remove the heater coolant hoses. Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped). Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps. Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing. To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps. When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Churping fan noise inside car behind the middle heater/air vent and a smell of burning oil or anti-freeze coats me and my clothes while inside car Help Help.

Not familiar with Saab at all, but on every other car made, if you smell coolant inside the car and a fog covers the windows, the heater core needs to be replaced. Depending on the design of the heater box that contains your blower motor and heater core, leaking coolant may be destroying your blower motor, and causing the noises and metal smell.

Smell and white smoke coming thur ac vents

Your heater core has developed a leak (of coolant). The smell is the "sweet" smell of ethylene glycol,
a component of engine coolant. The white smoke is steam coming from the heated coolant evaporating.
The coolant is dripping into your duct work under the dashboard, and apparently being evaporated
out of the ductwork and sent into the passenger compartment, meaning its a small leak.
When the leak gets worse, you may get wet carpet on the front passenger side.

Steam coming out oe heater vent

Sometimes on really hot and humid days, the AC will make a steam like vapor out of your vents and/or defrosters, but most often this is caused by a heater core leak.

Why does heater smell sweet

Hi yu heater smelling sweet is not a good thing. There is an engine coolant leak probably in the heater core and the smell your noticing is aspirated ainti-freeze. Check your engine coolant. It should be slowly lowering. The only fix is to have the heater core replaced. You can for the moment bypass the heater core by looing the hoses together with a nipple on the engine side of the firewall but you will have no heat or heated defrosting abilities until you replace the heater core.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Car will not defrost . Side windows especially. Have tried AC. Nothing seems to work

Do you smell and coolant? It's heater core season. Sounds to me like it could be a small leak in the heater core. Check the passenger side floorboard for any signs or smells of coolant. the Stick

Strange smell when heat is on heat works fine just strange smell also have to add coolant about every three months

sounds like you got a heater core leak, the heater core is what the coolant flows thru into your heater box in your dash to allow you to have heat, sounds like the core is leaking,by the smell and the low coolant i would say it is leaking, youll need to replace it before it blows out, you dont need 2 gallon of 200 degree coolant flowing into your car,,,

How do I know if my heater core is bad?

The heater core shares the same housing as the air conditioning evaporator core. The drain for the AC is designed to leak condensation. The coolant could be draining out of the same drain hole. To test a heater core you must use a cooling system pressure tester. If the pressure drops during testing search for your leak looking at all your cooling system components including your radiator. If the heater core is leaking coolant should be coming out of the AC drain hole.

1999 Ford Windstar 3.8 no heat

If you have a knock or clicking noise behind the radio, it is the blend motor. The blend door is spring loaded and the gears in the blend motor are "stripped". The door is spring loaded so that the door is closed to the heater core. About 2 hours to replace and a lot of bending and stretching. You don't have to remove the dash, but all of the trim, radio, and controls will need to come out.
