PERMANENT FIX that doesn't cost a dime or require any tools. It happened to me by accident. Break the detante by moving the gear selector while holding the manual override lever (plastic lever inside the access hole). Once it is gone no matter what the brake switch calls for (lock gear selector or not) the gear selector will always be movable because the mechanical locking mechanism is no longer there. TADA!!! So what if you no longer have to depress the brake pedal in order to change gears. Call it a retro fix.....!
The part number for this bushing- 68064273AB
For people's further reference; On the other side of the plastic lever exposed under the driver-side circle is a metal rod that goes up and down. If depressing the brake + pushing the plastic lever doesn't work, you can uses a philips screwdriver to loosen the gear panel and the whole gear casing to get at that metal rod. Gently pushing it upward will release the gear stick from Park. Probably it will lock again when you return to Park, but you can repeat that until you get it fixed properly.

SOURCE: My dodge caliber gear shifter wont come out of
I had the same problem on my 2007 dodge caliber. If you look in the manual there are some directions for this, but simply, next to your gearshift on the passenger side there is a circle in the dash. Pry this out and there is a lever to release the shifter. You will need to probably replace a switch that attaches to the upper part of your brake.(It is a cheaply made part with plastic) I can't think of the name of it right now. It cost me about $17 at the dodge dealership for the part. It only takes about 10 minutes to repair, but you should get a mechanic to do it because it has to be adjusted correctly or the part is worthless. I hope that this helps! (you may have already figured it out since it's been 10 days since you posted)
